February is heart disease awareness month and we often find that the testing done to evaluate for cardiovascular risk is inadequate with traditional testing methods, and more advanced metrics are often overlooked or ignored. Heart disease is still the number one killer of both men and women in the United States, despite increased prescribing of cholesterol lowering medications that often have more harm than benefit. The morbidity and mortality with this intervention are often not significantly changed, and more often than not the risks of this class of medication is not fully disclosed to the patients. There is a better way, and it does not involve a potentially dangerous drug. Cholesterol is only part of the story. We need to look at metabolic factors, insulin metabolism, hormone levels, diet, lifestyle etc. There is a better way.
