❗ Batt Insulation Installed Backwards — Why It Matters
During a recent inspection, batt insulation was observed installed with the paper (kraft) facing the wrong direction.
The paper backing on batt insulation acts as a v***r retarder, and it is designed to face the conditioned (heated) living space of the home.
When installed correctly, the facing helps:
✔️ Control moisture movement through the assembly
✔️ Reduce condensation inside ceilings or walls
✔️ Protect framing and insulation from moisture damage
✔️ Maintain the insulation’s effectiveness
When the facing is installed backwards, moisture from the conditioned space can move into the insulation and framing where it may condense. Over time this can contribute to:
• Reduced insulation performance
• Moisture accumulation in the structure
• Potential mold or deterioration of building materials
This type of issue is common because insulation is often installed quickly during construction or renovations.
💡 Small installation details can make a big difference in how a home performs.
