SUMMER of '86 Brings Nostalgic Energy to Du Quoin Summer Concerts in the Park

DU QUOIN, IL — The sounds of nostalgia will fill the summer air on July 7 as SUMMER of '86 takes the stage during “Oldies Night” at the Du Quoin Summer Concerts in the Park series.

Led by Jermaine Bollinger, the retro-inspired project has quickly become known for blending synth-driven nostalgia, emotional storytelling, and the timeless atmosphere of classic summer nights into a modern musical experience. Performing from 7 PM to 9 PM, SUMMER of '86 will close out the evening following Chris Owens’ opening performance from 6 PM to 7 PM.

Inspired by glowing city lights, VHS memories, arcade culture, and the feeling of growing up in simpler times, SUMMER of '86 has connected with listeners through releases like Nobody and 90s Nights. The project captures the spirit of late-night drives, neon reflections, and the emotional weight of remembering the past while still moving forward.

The Summer Concerts in the Park series, organized by Du Quoin Tourism, will also feature food trucks, vendors, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities throughout the month of July.

SUMMER of '86 continues to expand its nostalgic synth-driven sound with two very different releases. 90s Nights leans heavily into late-night neon nostalgia, blending retro pop, R&B textures, and cinematic emotion inspired by the glow of city lights, cassette memories, and midnight conversations. Meanwhile, Nobody showcases a more vulnerable and introspective side of the project, balancing melancholy themes with atmospheric production and emotionally driven songwriting.

Tanya Handkins’ Heart’s Desire delivers a heartfelt mix of classic rock, blues, and soul-inspired influences, highlighting her powerful vocal delivery and deeply personal storytelling. The release further establishes Handkins as one of the standout voices emerging from the Salvation Studios roster.

Raw, nostalgic, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful, Music Never Hurt Me tells the story of Bollinger’s upbringing through poverty, homelessness, emotional abuse, bullying, fractured faith, racism, family dysfunction, and generational trauma — while also chronicling the healing power of music, love, therapy, and fatherhood.

Blending vivid childhood memories with deeply reflective storytelling, Bollinger takes readers through the defining moments of his life: growing up in unstable homes, finding refuge in TGIF sitcoms and video games, discovering belonging through marching band and music, navigating broken relationships, surviving ministry trauma, and ultimately learning how to stop cycles of abuse rather than repeat them.

“Music became the one thing in my life that never abandoned me,” Bollinger says. “This book is about survival, healing, and realizing that love can truly change a person. I wanted to tell the truth — not just for myself, but for my children and anyone else who has ever felt trapped by their past.”
