When I read today that the Missouri Bar & Grille, a legendary downtown watering hole for newspaper journalists will close on December 5 after more than 35 years at 701 North Tucker Boulevard, I thought: “Great place, great times, great friends, great memories.”
As a reporter and editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch years ago, I stopped in there frequently after work for a drink on the way home. Typically about half of the Post-Dispatch newsroom staff was there from every editorial department at the paper.
It was a place where journalists met and chilled out. When NBC's Tom Brokaw came to town he unexpectedly stopped in for a quick drink. CBS Sports crews sometimes stopped in at the Grille when they were in town to broadcast football games.
Road-weary Associated Press reporters pumped quarters into the payphone to call in their story notes to New York. Plenty of writers used that payphone to call their bookies. More than a few reporters used it to alert their spouses that they'd be late getting home. Many others used it to call a cab.
I met a woman reporter dressed to the nines from Bloomberg News in New York City who'd stopped in because she'd heard it was the place to be. Trifon, the part owner with his business partner Chris, was an ever-smiling bartender who always bought drinks for newspaper men and newspaper women on their birthday. One night, a bikinied woman jumped out of a giant cake as it rolled in from the back to help my good Post-Dispatch friend (who will remain nameless) celebrate his birthday.
It was a place where reporters pitched story ideas to their newsroom bosses, or tried to get job transfers or promotions. It was a place that reporters' wives called when trying to find their husbands. It was a place where out of town reporters, male or female, could "get a ride home."
I think we all knew then that we were among the last generation of old-time newspaper men and newspaper women. It was a place like we will never see again.
