The Sweet Potato Project

The Sweet Potato Project The Sweet Potato Project provided entrepreneurial skills for "at-risk" youth based on products made from produce they've grow in their own neighborhoods

Created in 2012 through a partnership with the North Area Community Development Corporation, the Sweet Potato Project offered educational and money-making opportunities for “at risk” urban youth. Youth (ages 16 to 20) planted sweet potatoes on vacant lots in North St. Louis and received lessons in marketing, sales, website development and more. Curriculum was designed to teach how to turn produce

into a viable, marketable products that they themselves could sell. The desired goal was to bring vibrant economic activity back to long-neglected urban areas by creating alternative and progressive ways to create and distribute products that are grown and created within disadvantaged communities. The project was put on hold in 2020 with the hope of partnering it with a larger institution able to bring the program to its full fruition.
