If your website is slow, it is probably because there are items that are "heavy". Here are 3 common culprits:

Big image files
Photos straight from your computer or phone are often way bigger than your website actually needs. Compressing them before uploading can speed things up a lot without losing quality.

Too many plugins or extras.
Every add-on you install adds a little weight to your site. If you're not using it, it's probably worth removing.

Videos on auto-play.
These start loading the moment someone lands on your page, even before they hit play. Using a thumbnail that links to an external platform like YouTube instead keeps videos from slowing down your site.

None of these require a developer or a redesign, just a few small adjustments that can make a real difference.

Does SEO confuse you?

Think about the last time you needed something. Maybe your sink was leaking, or you wanted a private chef for a dinner, or you were looking for a bakery for a birthday cake.

What did you do? You probably typed it into Google. "Plumber near me." "Private chef in your city." "Bakery near me."

Or maybe you went to Facebook and searched it, or posted in a local group asking if anyone knew someone good.

Now think about the businesses that showed up. The ones you actually clicked on. Chances are they had a few things in common. Their name and what they do were easy to find. Their location was clear. The site loaded fast and didn't look broken on your phone.

The businesses that didn't show up at all? They might be just as good, maybe even better. But if Google or Facebook can't tell what they do or where they're located, they basically don't exist to someone searching.

That's the whole idea behind SEO. It's not some technical mystery. It's just making sure your business shows up the same way you'd want to find a business yourself.

A few simple things help with this:

1. Make sure your website clearly says what you do, who you help, and where you're located, somewhere Google can read it, not just in a photo.

2. Set up a free Google Business Profile if you haven't. This is often the first thing people see before they even click your website.

3. Keep your site fast and easy to use on a phone, since that's how most people are searching.

4. Make sure to have a Facebook (or social media page) and have keywords people would type in your bio / about.

5. Bonus: A YouTube channel also helps becasues it is the second largest search engine behind Google.

6. Next time you search for something yourself, pay attention to what made you click. That's exactly what your customers are looking for too.

Building a website feels overwhelming until you break it down into steps. Here's the simple version, no tech jargon.

1. Choose your platform. Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress are all beginner friendly. Pick one and don't overthink it.

2. Get your domain name. This is your web address, like www.yourbusiness.com. Make sure you're the one who owns it.

3. Start with a template. Every platform has free designs ready to go. You're filling in the blanks, not starting from scratch.

4. Build your one page, section by section. Header, Services, About, Proof, Contact, and a Call To Action button. That's really all you need.

5. Add your photos. A picture of you and a few of your work go a long way. Your phone camera works fine.

6. Check it on your phone. Make sure it looks good, the buttons work, and everything is easy to tap.

7. Publish your website. You're live.

Simple steps. Real results.

If your website is struggling to bring in customers, here's a quick checklist to help you improve your site.

Your site is often the first impression people get of your business. Even if you're getting traffic, that doesn't always mean you're getting leads. Most websites lose customers because of small, avoidable mistakes.

1. Say what you do, right away.
When someone lands on your site, they should instantly know what you offer and who it's for. If they have to scroll or think about it, you've already lost them.

2. Make it load fast.
If your site takes more than a few seconds to load, people leave before they even see it.

3. Make sure it works on phones.
Most people are browsing on their phone. If text is hard to read or buttons are hard to tap, they'll exit fast.

4. Give them a clear next step.
"Book Now", "Get a Quote", whatever it is, make it obvious and easy to find.

5. Keep your menu simple.
If people can't find what they need in a few seconds, they'll give up.

6. Show you're legit.
Reviews, testimonials, or examples of your work go a long way in building trust.

7. Keep your writing simple.
Short sentences. Easy words. People should be able to skim and still get it.

8. Help Google find you.
Clear titles and headings help your site show up in searches.

9. Make it easy to contact you.
Phone, email, or message, keep it visible, especially on your homepage.

10. Know what's working.
If you're not tracking visits, you're guessing. Basic analytics tell you what's working and what's not.

Fix these small things. Get more customers.

How to build a simple one page website (Even if you're not tech savy)

Building a website doesn't have to be complicated. Here's how to get a simple one page site up even if you've never done it before:

Step 1 — Pick Your Platform: Choose where your website lives. No coding needed. Example: Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy

Step 2 — Get Your Domain Name: This is your web address. Keep it simple and make sure YOU own it. We recommend going to GoDaddy for your domain.

Step 3 — Pick A Template: Pre-built designs you just fill in. Clean and simple always wins.

Step 4 — Build Your One Page: Six simple sections. Header, Services, About, Proof, Contact, and a Call To Action.

Step 5 — Add Your Photos: You can use UnDraw if you don't have any professional images yet.

Step 6 — Check It On Your Phone: Most people will find you on their phone first. Make sure it looks right.

A lot of businesses and organizations ask us about websites, and honestly the advice floating around out there often does more harm than good. So here is the short, no nonsense version.

When you are just starting out, you do not need to spend thousands and you do not need anything fancy. You need a few things done right:

Make sure Google can actually find your site. A surprising number of org sites are accidentally hidden from search and have no idea.

Own your own domain and login details. Never let a builder or a web person hold the keys to your organization.

Make sure people can access it easily on their phone.

Focus the whole site on guiding your visitors to learn about you and how to get help.

That is genuinely most of it. If you ever want a free set of eyes on your current site, or help figuring out where to start, feel free to reach out. We work with businesses and nonprofits. We are always glad to point people in the right direction, no strings.

Choose a social media platform where you can consistently reach new people and stay connected with your current customers.

Bonus: Research the audience on each platform and how businesses typically use it before committing.

Your website is your online store.

And a lot of business owners accidentally make theirs confusing.

People land on the site and can’t quickly figure out:

• what you sell
• how much it costs
• what problem you solve
• what step to take next

That’s why people leave.

In this video we break down how to think about your website like a real store so you can make it easier for people to buy from you.

Growthwork:
Pull up your website on your phone and ask yourself:

Can people quickly understand what I do?
Can they easily find pricing/services?
Is it clear what they should do next?

If not…start fixing one thing this week.
