✈️ Happy Birthday to the United States Air Force!

On September 18, 1947, the U.S. Air Force was established as its own branch of the Armed Forces. Today marks 79 years of service.

Here in the Lowcountry, that service is especially close to home. Airmen, military families, civilian employees, and retirees connected to Joint Base Lindsey Graham are part of communities all around us.

Today, we recognize the men and women who have served in the Air Force — past and present — and the families who support them along the way.

To everyone who has worn the uniform, and everyone serving today:

Thank you for your service. 🇺🇸

Sweetest Third Thursday is happening Thursday, Sept. 17 from 5:30–8:30 PM at Hutchinson Square Stage in Downtown Summerville.

This month’s Third Thursday helps kick off Sweet Tea Festival weekend with a little extra local flavor — and live music by the SCOTTY OLIVER BAND. 🎸

Come stroll downtown, grab a drink or a bite, enjoy the music, and soak up one of the sweetest nights of the week in Summerville.

🍹 DID YOU KNOW?

Summerville’s connection to sweet tea goes back a lot further than the festival.

One of the most interesting pieces of the story traces back to 1890, when historical records connected to a large gathering in the Summerville area included an order for an incredible 880 gallons of iced tea and 600 pounds of sugar.

That discovery eventually became part of the history behind Summerville’s claim as the Birthplace of Sweet Tea — but the story goes even deeper, with local tea-growing history dating back to the late 1800s.

With the Sweet Tea Festival happening this week, it felt like the perfect time to look back at how sweet tea became such a big part of Summerville’s identity.
