Well, I'm back to having more time to turn! Here's the latest....

Mom wanted a pepper grinder so I made a one handed push button one a little while back. She said "it doesn't give me enough pepper, and I have to refill it too often!" So, time to try new things....
The image that looks like an old grinder is made from Bocote wood (smells like pickles when turning) and along with this, I made a Canarywood pizza cutter (stainless steel cutter, etc.) This really ground some coarse pepper flakes and wasn't that difficult to make.
Also got another, different type of grinder done tonight, this is from Granadillo. You turn the level round and round and voila' - pepper!
Both grinders have ceramic gears/movements so they won't rush and will last for a longggg time.

Hey all - it's the end of the school year and the middle of Spring Football practice, so posts will be few and far between for a little while. Thanks for looking at our turnings and other things!

I have been working on a website to showcase all of my work - in one location. There's HUNDREDS of pictures and even a page with different type of pictures of wood from around the world! Check it out!

Spring Break day 5 turn…Monkey Puzzle. Yes that’s the name of the tree! Native to Chile and Argentina; was given the name because folklore said that “even a monkey would have a hard time figuring how to climb that tree.” Two photos of the branches and actual tree included.

Piece started 6” diameter by 2” high. Made a “box” out of it - after smoothing and shaping the outside I have to hand saw the top off then continue. No small feat….anyhow, finished with 100% natural beeswax from Kristen Dorr Dorr’s Farm in Gable, SC.

Will probably be my last turn of the break…going to take Melissa on a little R&R weekend trip…

Day 3 Spring Break…first image is called a leather “slicker”. Old colleague of mine does leatherwork and asked if I could make one. It’s to round and flatten edges of leather - different thicknesses etc. bottom point is for belt holes etc. showed him a picture and he said - “looks pretty much like what I use”. Just never know what types of things can be turned on a lathe!

Today I went by a boutique type of store to see about placing my stuff there and they weren’t there - no sign etc. Since I had stuff gathered together I was able to get good photos of 90% of my stuff so now I’ll post online with prices etc. for anyone interested.

After taking pics I had some leftover Ash so I turned two “shot glasses” as a challenge to myself. Smallest one is 1.75” wide and 2” deep, holds 2.75 liquid ounces. Other is1.75” across and 2.75” deep and holds 8.5 liquid ounces. They may not be the right size for a true shot but they are finished to hold liquid (food safe) and I think i did well.

Day 3 Spring Break I made some “smalls” for two people. Pizza cutter (more like weapon 😂) is from Black and White Ebony (just the 6” block of wood was $23!) and the ice cream scooper is made from Goncalo Alves, more commonly known as tiger wood.

I've been SWAMPED at school with graphics and the new laser engraver, not to mention teaching, but found some GREAT QUALITY TIME today in the shop....

Popped out five bottle openers today from Brazilian cherry, Spanish Cedar and Mango. After, I checked my Camphor blank and it was ready. I'm usually not fond of twice turns (I like instant results with kiln dried) but when given the chance for some "fancy" wood, have to give it a go.
Straight from SE Asia…camphor as in the ingredient in Vicks chest rub. Sure made garage smell nice! Roughed it to about 1” thickness inside and out, let it dry out in a bag of its own shavings for about 6-8 weeks and got this at 38% moisture and turned today at 11%
Sanded to 320 and finished with sanding sealer, followed by Tried and True

Haven't had much time to do any woodworking or turning lately - I also serve as a high school teacher/coach and one of my classes is a Digital Design & Publication class - we have and use wide format printers and cutter and design many, many, MANY items for customers in AND OUT of schools - so far this month, we've designed and printed over a mile of mesh banner! Soon though, very soon, I will get some more "me" time back in the shop! Thanks for your support....and if you need any graphics work, just give me a holler!

We can print up to 5 feet high and unlimited length...full color, decals, banners, wall coverings, etc. If you can dream it, we can do it! Students really enjoying this class!
