Advice to young gymnastic gym owners just starting out:
First: plan your dream. What's your vision 5, 10, 20 years out from now.

Second: start small and manageable. Let the business teach you as you grow, and lean on tools like AI to do what used to take a full front desk staff.

Third: figure out your real gaps… money, location, equipment, and then get connected..
Business isn't a solo sport. Get your people.

In 2016, Mimi Phene-McKellar opened a second gym. It didn't go how she planned.
Nothing did, actually.

She assumed her vision would translate automatically to her staff… that they'd want what she wanted, understand it the way she did. They didn't.

She'd been making big decisions for 25 years without a real system behind them, and expansion exposed every gap at once.

Her honest takeaway: the bigger you grow, the less you personally do. So your structure has to be able to carry that weight before you scale.

Beautiful equipment can't fix a broken foundation.

This happens too many times… kids arriving from other gyms carrying mental blocks that never should've formed. Pushed too fast, too soon, before the fundamentals were ever really taught.

The foundation gets built wrong, and by the time it shows up as fear or burnout, it's already there. Baked in.

This is why fundamentals should be taught like they're sacred, not a box to check before moving kids up levels.

Big money doesn't build a great gym. 🏋️

Andy Seeley breaks down a mistake he sees constantly in gymnastics gyms; investors and newcomers walking in with millionaire budgets, assuming a gymnastics gym is just space and equipment. It's not.

The real gym is the coaches, the standards, the relationships built class after class.
Put average coaches in a state-of-the-art facility and you just built an expensive warehouse.

Put incredible coaches in an aging space, and you've built something families will drive across town for.
