A lot of dry cleaners spend their time trying to bring in more walk-in customers.

Nothing wrong with that.

But the operators growing the fastest are focused on something different: getting the same customers to come back again and again.

That’s what route revenue is.

A customer schedules pickup and delivery, uses the service regularly, and suddenly you’re not starting from zero every month.

You know who’s coming back.
You know what revenue is already on the books.
And your business becomes a lot more predictable.

The best part?

Customers love convenience. Once they get used to having their clothes picked up and delivered, they rarely want to go back.

While some cleaners are still waiting for people to walk through the door, others are building routes and creating recurring revenue every week.

Your competitor just added delivery.

Have you?

NEW EPISODE OUT! What does it take to stay in the dry cleaning industry for 40+ years and still be excited about the future?

In this episode of Cleaner Conversations, we sit down with Jan Barlow, owner of Jan’s Professional Dry Cleaners in Clio, Michigan.

Jan’s story is incredible. She went from teaching and library science into building one of the most respected garment care businesses in the country, serving as DLI President, earning international recognition, and helping shape the industry far beyond her own plant.

We talked about:
• Why dry cleaning is still about people and chemistry
• How customer expectations have changed
• What younger generations misunderstand about garment care
• Why training your team is one of the most important things you can do
• Caring for wedding gowns, heirlooms, and irreplaceable garments
• What it means to lead with curiosity, grit, and servant leadership
• Why no owner should try to build their business alone

One of the biggest takeaways from Jan was simple: this industry still has a strong future, but owners have to keep learning, keep communicating, and keep surrounding themselves with the right people.

This is a great episode for any cleaner who needs perspective, encouragement, and a reminder of why the work we do matters.

Kermit Engh has spent decades building, buying, selling, and consulting businesses, and this episode is full of the kind of wisdom that only comes from experience.

As the owner of Fashion Cleaners in Omaha and a leader with Methods for Management, Kermit brings a practical perspective on what dry cleaning owners should actually be paying attention to.

We talked about knowing your numbers, labor costs, money leaks, employee retention, exit planning, peer groups, and how to build a business that does not depend on you for every decision.
If you’re a cleaner trying to grow, get unstuck, or build a healthier company, this is an episode worth listening to.

Looking for a timely marketing campaign for your dry cleaning business?

Father's Day creates a natural opportunity to engage customers with promotions focused on dress shirts, suits, polos, and business attire.

Successful campaigns typically include:
• A clear offer
• A simple promo code
• A strong call to action
• A limited-time deadline

Small seasonal promotions often generate some of the highest engagement because they're relevant, timely, and easy for customers to understand.

Most local businesses focus heavily on their website, advertising, and social media.

But many customer decisions happen before any of those assets are viewed.

A customer searches for a service nearby.

Two businesses appear.

One has significantly more reviews and stronger social proof.

That business typically earns the click.

Google reviews are more than reputation management.

They’re a trust signal that directly influences visibility, click-through rates, and customer acquisition.

If you’re investing in growth, your review strategy should be a priority.

Ken Sandy put it simply on Cleaner Conversations:

“The operator today that’s not evolving into a more culture-driven atmosphere might already be in trouble.”

That’s not a soft opinion. That’s a market reality.

The next generation of workers and consumers don’t separate where they work or spend money from what those businesses stand for. They align with companies that align with their moral compass.

For dry cleaning operators an industry often built on decades of family tradition, this is both the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity right now.

Ken also talked about something that doesn’t come up enough: the responsibility of setting this industry up for the next generation. Not just your own business. The whole industry.

That kind of thinking is what separates operators who build something lasting from those who just keep the lights on.
