No complicated marketing research needed here! Just listen 😅

Talk to people who have the problem that you are looking to solve. How they discuss their problem will tell you everything you need to know.

When you set small, achievable monthly or weekly goals, you'll reach your big-picture goals. But when you focus only on the big picture, you may become overwhelmed.

That's some of the best business advice I've ever received. It was from my dad.

When do you find business advice from others helpful?

Most ideas are cool, but not all ideas inspire action.
Monitor actions, not interest.

Does a person's excitement for your idea align with their actions?

See tips on how to monitor actions from the link in the comments below.

Build and they'll come ❌
Market as you build ✔️ BUT...

How can you concentrate on marketing when you're overwhelmed and trying to turn your product vision into reality?

Here's my high-level step-by-step!
These questions are typically what I go through in my branding and marketing planning workshops:

1. What's my brand vision and story?
- Name one primary thing that you'd like to be known for, and how you'll tell your story of why, and how your product or service is needed.

2. What goals and metrics will I track to indicate success or progress?

- Try not to focus on high-level sales goals at the beginning. At this stage, we aim to track micro goals, including engagement, soft sign-ups, agreeing to demos, content saves, and shares.

3. How will we create buzz as we build?

- If you have limited resources, focus on one marketing channel or activity that you can truly commit to. For example, if writing comes easily to you but writing articles appears too daunting, start with mini blog posts that you share on social (just like this one).

4. How will I keep my marketing going?

- We've all been there. It's possible to become discouraged (especially if you are not seeing immediate results. That's why you must have a plan in place.

Tip: Establish a rule for how long you have to test initiatives, such as 90 days, and know when it's time to learn from the results and try the next thing.

There you go! Here's my four-step strategy.

Feel free to steal it, refine it, and use it as you think through your marketing process. I'd only love to hear how it goes 🙂

Yes, if you think marketing is more complicated than I've described, you're correct!

There are many nuances to marketing, but when we don't have a simple yet clear roadmap of what we need to do, we get lost in the details.

Be unapologetically human,

What's the 4/2 manual pilot?

It's when you run a two-week manual pilot of your business idea or concept. And while at it, you track four main metrics.

Here's how it goes:

→ Step 1: Set the conditions for your pilot idea.

💡 Answer: who you'd like to market to, a key aspect of your idea that you'd like to test, and why the test would be beneficial to anyone.

→ Step 2: Recruit five target customers for your idea who are willing to be part of your manual pilot.

💡Ensure that they are people who would actually use your solution in real life. Run an outreach campaign that clearly outlines the pilot.

→ Step 3: Run the pilot.

💡Follow your set plan as closely as possible. Make changes only when your original idea results in a poor customer experience.

→ Step 4: Track your four metrics: Leads, lead-to-customer conversion rate, fulfillment time, and refunds.

💡Why just these four metrics?

→ Leads help you know if you can generate demand for your idea

→ Lead to customer conversion ratio, help you know if your brand message resonates

→ Fulfillment time: allows you to track your costs and to improve customer experience

→ Refunds allow for better tracking of unhappy customers

Then tighten the flow. Remove extra steps.

Let the results from your manual experiment guide your software or automation decisions.

Have fun experimenting!

Recently, I got a voice outreach message from a LinkedIn connection.

I was intrigued because it was a voice message.

I listened and immediately realized that it was an AI voice and message.

The idea of creating a voice note to convey a personalized feeling worked, but the ex*****on didn't make it feel genuinely personal.

Ultimately, I moved from being intrigued to being uninterested.

It led me to wonder if the campaign was worth it.

I've put together this simple guide on when to automate, when to create a template, and when to keep it human.

Some customers will never buy — and that’s okay.

They might love your brand, engage with your content, even recommend you to others, but still never convert.

The difference isn’t loyalty, it’s mindset.

Here’s how the funnel really works:

Top of the Funnel
Free Riders — just exploring.
Focus: Awareness and engagement.

Middle of the Funnel
Fence Sitters — still deciding.
Focus: Trust-building and conversion.

Bottom of the Funnel
True Believers — in love.
Focus: Retention and advocacy.

The goal? Always think like your customer so you can stay a few steps ahead as you build.

The truth is, interest isn't a form of validation.

Product validation is more about what people do.
Not what they say they'll do.

That's why effective idea validation focuses on observable behavior, such as clicks, sign-ups, payments, or engagement patterns.

These signals show intent.

I've put together 8 Unusual Ways to Validate Your Idea (Without a Survey).
I'd love to hear your thoughts.

We all tend to envision growing our idea into something big.

The problem is that's exactly what sometimes gets in the way. We spend a little too much time trying to figure out how to make it all happen a little too soon.

But first, we need to let the idea take root, then nurture it based on what we learn during the testing stage.

Skipping the testing stage often doesn't help us grow faster; it just makes us blind to our blind spots.

The other side of the coin is, we can sometimes get stuck in an endless loop:

Testing ↔ Learning. REPEAT.
No real sales.

To avoid the loop, simply set a feasible timeline for your testing stage. You don't even have to have all the steps mapped out.

For example:
Step 1: Create the most basic version of my idea and then test it with real people over a three-month period.

Step 2: Use what I discover to determine the next steps.

Just be sure to let your idea breathe so it can truly take off like I know it can!

What are some of your favorite ways to product test?

I share some of mine in my recent blog on ways to validate your idea.
