Freight cost is only one part of what it takes to move inventory from the supplier to its final destination.
A lower freight rate can look attractive, but it does not necessarily mean the shipment has a lower overall cost.
The total supply chain cost can include:
• Product and packaging costs
• Inspection and quality control
• Inland transportation
• Freight and handling
• Customs, duties, and destination charges
• Storage and inventory carrying costs
• Rework or replacement costs caused by delays or quality issues
This is why comparing freight rates alone can give you an incomplete picture.
A cheaper freight option may involve longer transit times, additional handling, or delays that affect inventory availability. The initial saving can then disappear through other costs further along the supply chain.
For FBA sellers, those delays can also affect replenishment planning and create additional pressure to move inventory faster.
The better question is not simply:
“Which freight option is cheaper?”
It is:
“What will this shipment actually cost to get inventory ready for sale?”
Freight cost tells you what transportation costs.
Total supply chain cost shows you what it takes to move inventory through the entire journey.
The cheapest freight rate is not always the cheapest supply chain.
