How Much Should a Small Business Spend on Marketing?

The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends that businesses generating under $5 million in revenue should plan to spend around 7-8% of their revenues on marketing. So for a $5M/yr company that means $350K/yr in marketing expenses. For smaller companies, like most local businesses, according to the US Census Bureau, the average revenue of a small business with no employees is $46,978/year. That would mean for a 1-man shop business owner your marketing spend is $3,758/yr. This marketing spend includes paid ads and organic marketing like local SEO.

It may cost you extra, but the traffic and brand awareness you’ll get will expose your small business to a wider audience leading to an increase in sales.

9 Ways To Fail at Internet Marketing

1. Be filled with doubt. Cultivate it at every step, looking for reasons why you will fail, why your business plan won't work, why effort is fruitless and hopeless. People who are successful want that success, they dream about it, breath it, live it in their minds over and over before it happens in real life. When successful people feel doubt trying to creep in, they stamp it out faster than a cockroach in their kitchen. No wonder why they succeed. If you're going to fail and fail big, you've got to be sure you're filled with self-doubt from the time you get up until you fall asleep at night.

Whatever you do, do not listen to or read positive messages, do not become enthusiastic, and try your best not to be happy. Just sit in the corner quietly with your milk and a giant box of cookies (or your beer and burritos) and don't come out of that corner until you've convinced yourself that you're a big fat failure who will never succeed at anything. Remember, negative self-talk is crucial to your failure. If you let positive self-talk creep in, you may accidentally succeed, and then where would you be?

2. Be a vacillating slick w***y. Don't stick to one plan. Do NOT make any decisions. Do not move in one direction – move in all directions at once. Buy every ebook and program out there on how to be successful online, and then don't even read them. If you do read them, bounce from one to the next without doing anything. Change your mind every week on your course of action. When you've mastered this, begin changing your mind every day. Aim to change your mind hourly, because this is the pinnacle of failure.

Here's the monkey mind chatter to strive for: “Should you do this or do that or do this and that or that other thing or what about this hey I could do the thing over there but whoa, what's this? Maybe I should do this – what do you think?”

Go ahead and second, third, fourth and fifth guess yourself silly and until your mind is numb and all you can do is veg out in front of the TV. Above all else, do NOT make one plan and stick to it – that 's the kiss of success and you do not want that.

3. Turn your obstacles into failures. Those stupid successful people are always taking their obstacles and turning them into triumphs. When their new website isn't cutting it, what do they do? Fix it until it's making sales, or start over and find a way to make it successful. That's crazy! And it's also more work, and who needs that? If you should accidentally actually DO something like build a new website, hope that it just sits there and gets moldy. That way you can heave a big sigh and say that “you tried” as you drown your sorrows in hops at the local pub.

Above all else, when you run into an obstacle do NOT take a step back and decide on your best course of action – this often leads to success. Do not decide that if this way didn't work, there must be a better way. And do not tell yourself that you just found one way that doesn't work, and you're that much closer to finding a way that does work. Instead, throw up your hands, say that Internet Marketing doesn't work because it's all just a big scam, and give up.

4. Reinvent the wheel. If there is already a proven method for accomplishing something, ignore that method and go invent a new one. For example, there are all sorts of ways to successfully drive targeted traffic to websites, and these methods are used everyday by millions of online marketers. Do NOT use these methods! Instead, invent an entirely new method. This will take up lots of your time and probably lots of your money, too.

Plus the odds of it working are miniscule to none, so you're almost guaranteed to fail. See how easy it is to avoid success? Simply thumb your nose at anything that's proven to work and strike out to find an entirely new method to fail. (I have this traffic idea, by the way, which involves 3 dairy cows, a radial antennae and a photo of a Topeka Taco Stand – I'll let you know how it works out.)

5. Indulge in plenty of delusions of grandeur. Your product is going to be the biggest thing since the Ipod only it's going to be BIGGER because even the tribesmen of the rainforest will be buying this up faster than blow darts and you're going to get so much free publicity that Oprah is going to do a 1 hour prime time special just on you and your product and cripes, even your own MOTHER will love it, and she hates everything!

Whew. In your quest for Internet marketing failure, feeding these festering frenzied fantastic feats of glory will take up a major share of your time. After all, if you're daydreaming you're not working. You're also not looking at the real world issues of whether or not there is actually a demand for your new discount concrete billy bob beer and crumpet party statues. One of the fastest ways to failure is to devise a product no one but you desires – and then spend your time daydreaming about the fortune you're about to make.

Besides, this is all about failure. What are you doing dreaming about making fortunes anyway?

6. Be careless. Sure your ghostwriter just submitted the new product to you – just go ahead and launch it without reading it, right? Of course! How else are you going to miss the glaring error on page 42, or the fact that she omitted the entire key section people are dying to read?

Look, if you attend to details and make sure everything is in order prior to launch, you might actually be successful. So when your programmer sends you that new software, don't check it, don't click any links and do not test it. Just assume it's good enough and start selling – you may do enough damage to your reputation to ensure future failure on a permanent basis.

7. Be lazy. Go watch TV, stay in bed, play video games, whatever. Just do NOT go to work on your business because you might actually accomplish something. Pity all those successful people who spend hours upon hours working on their business – no wonder why they are confined to making money, getting accolades and being successful. If they only knew how easy it is to fail if they would just stop accomplishing stuff.

8. Be sick. That's right – how can you succeed if you're sick all the time, right? So go ahead and eat that junk food. Stay up all night. Drink until you puke. And above all do NOT exercise. Exercise is shown to increase your health in a thousand and one different ways, including making you THINK better.

And if you're thinking better, you're probably realizing this entire article has been utterly ridiculous – after all, you already know how to fail. Everyone knows that. And while it does take some effort to fail, it's well worth it. How else can you lay on your death bed one day, wishing you'd achieved your goals instead of being a doubt-filled, vacillating, failure seeking, wheel reinventing, delusional, careless, lazy, sick, almost-was Internet marketer?

9. Yes, there is a #9 – and that's to go do the OPPOSITE of all the opposites I just wrote about. Success isn't hard – you just need to get busy NOT doing all the things we've just covered here.

The SECRET Internet Marketing Ingredient

Growing up, our neighbor had a bull who was just about the most stubborn thing you've ever encountered. If you wanted it to go out to the pasture, it would steadfastly refuse to go and instead would spend the day in the barn. If you wanted it to come in out of the rain, it would stand out there in the pasture until it was soaked through and through, and still it would not come indoors to dry off. And so it went. No matter what you wanted this bull to do, it always seemed resolutely transfixed on taking the opposite course of action.

In Internet marketing, we often wonder why success comes so hard. Perhaps if we learn just one more technique, it will all fall together for us. Perhaps if we buy one more course, one more ebook or attend one more webinar, it will all make sense and money will rain down from the sky. And a month later, and a year later, where do most marketers find themselves? In the exact same place they were before.

Now you might wonder what a stubborn bull and a struggling Internet marketer have in common, and it's this: Both of them already hold success within themselves. The bull doesn't need an ebook on how to come in out of the rain anymore than a struggling marketer needs a 20th or 40th ebook on how to make money online.

What the bull and the Internet Marketer both need to be successful is simply a change of mind, or more specifically adopting what we might call a success mindset.

Rather than cursing the journey out to the green pasture when we're standing in the barn, or the rain when we don't have sense enough to come inside, we need merely change our thinking, and by changing our thinking we can change our actions, and thereby our results.

Instead of cursing the gurus for having lists of fellow marketers ready to promote their products to thousands of people, ask yourself how you can get into a position where you have a long list of fellow marketers who love to promote your products. (I'll give you a great technique for doing exactly that in this issue.)

Instead of getting frustrated that you can't seem to monetize Twitter, find out what others are doing that's working and copy and improve upon their methods (I give you several in this edition.)

And so it goes. Playing victim is telling yourself that it's too late to get into the Internet marketing game, that all the great niches are gone, that you'll never be able to do what others have already accomplished, and so forth. Playing victim is standing out in the rain and refusing to come inside, or standing inside and refusing to head for the green pastures.

Victims don't make money, they make misery — whereas a success mindset constantly asks how a negative can be turned into a positive, and how a shortfall can be remade into a windfall.

Every time you find yourself reacting negatively to something, correct yourself by seeing it as a challenge rather than a problem or obstacle. Do this enough and you will program yourself for success — after all, you cannot help but be successful if you are constantly taking positive action — and you can only take positive action when you first think the positive thoughts that lead to that action?

Also, learn to think long term. Success isn't leaping from one idea to the next, never settling on a course of action. Success is found when you choose your path and then stay on that path until you reach your destination. True, the trip may not unfold as you plan, but so long as you keep your eyes on the prize and continue to move forward, you cannot help but succeed.

And you don't need to invent new markets — rather, you need only find a market that is already profitable and then find ways to improve on what is being offered to that market. Find out what it is that people want, and not only deliver it to them, but go above and beyond in ways that are so extraordinarily helpful and pleasing, your name becomes synonymous with incredible value in that niche.

Forget magic bullets or new fangled programs that proclaim they will change everything for you in the wink of an eye. Instead, choose your niche, create your squeeze page and/or website and/or blog and focus on building your list with quality subscribers and new customers. Forget the gimmick that places thousands people on your list in a week who give you bogus email addresses or couldn't care less about your niche — it's a waste of your time and resources. Better to have 50 people on your list who are truly interested in your niche than 500 people who aren't. And better to have 2 proven buyers in that niche than 50 freebie seekers.

By focusing on finding a system that puts 5 or 10 great leads on your list each day, in short order you will find the method that works for you, day in and day out. And once you've got it, it's a simple matter to ramp it up so that the 5 or 10 become 50 or 100 or more. But it all starts at the beginning, at finding what works to bring in that first truly interested subscriber, and then the second and so forth. There are no shortcuts. True, there are many who will sell you on the idea that you can make your fortune or build your list overnight, but ask yourself this — who prospers when you purchase their product? Always it is them, while you are left with a little less cash and a little less hope.

Let others search for the holy magic grail of traffic that instantly floods their site with traffic. The thing about floods is while they are fast and deep, they're also messy and short lived. Instead, gradually grow your business on a rock solid foundation that can withstand any storm. Think of grabbing a few hundred or thousand dollars overnight, only to be left with no more income, versus doubling a penny each day for 30 days. Which would you choose? The doubling penny, of course. Yes, it leaves the cupboards bare for the first days and weeks — but then what an embarrassment of riches you receive as it builds and builds into a solid income that arrives day and night, regardless of the economy, trends, quirks in the market, competition and so forth.

And success is not just a matter of mindset, and not just a matter of choosing a path and sticking to it, finding what works and doing more of it — it's also about developing your skills as a marketer. What if this week you master how to write and submit articles that send traffic and links to your site? Perhaps next week you master setting up a blog and writing a post each day. And perhaps the week after you learn how to make short videos that inform and drive traffic. If each week you pick one new task to master, in less than 3 months you will know more than 95% of marketers out there. You don't need to master everything, but you do need to master some things — and those things are again determined by the path that you choose to build your online business.

And here's the kicker — when you've chosen your path to success and know what it is that you want to accomplish, you can go back to all those many programs you've purchased in the past and extract the jewels of information that do fit in with your business. Because now that you know your destination and you have good idea of how to get there, you've also gained the discernment necessary to find just the right information you need to get you there faster.

Summary
Internet marketers often wonder why success comes so hard. A struggling marketer need only change their mindset to be successful, and by changing our thinking we can change our actions, and thereby our results.

Instead of getting frustrated that you can't seem to monetize Twitter, find out what others are doing that's working and copy and improve upon their methods. Victims make misery, whereas success mindset constantly asks how a negative can be turned into a positive.

When you react negatively to something, see it as a challenge. This will help you take positive action.

Success is found when you choose your path and stay on that path until you reach your destination. You don't need to invent new markets — simply find a profitable niche and improve on what is already being offered to that market.

Forget magic bullets and new fangled programs that proclaim to change everything for you in the wink of an eye. Focus on building your list with quality subscribers and new customers.

By focusing on finding a system that puts 5 or 10 great leads on your list each day, you will find a way to ramp it up so that 5 or 10 become 50, 100 or more.

Let others search for the holy magic grail of traffic, but build a solid foundation for your business first. This foundation will withstand any storm and will allow you to earn money day and night.

Success is not just a matter of mindset, it's also a matter of developing your skills as a marketer. If you master one new task a week, in less than 3 months you will know more than 95% of marketers out there.

Avoid These 4 YouTube Marketing Mistakes

#1 – Just upload a video and traffic will flow
#2 – Thinking you're too small or new to make video
#3 - Creating a commercial
#4 - Trying too hard

YouTube is a great tool for marketing your business – if you can avoid the pitfalls...

Mistake #1 – Thinking all you need to do is upload a video and traffic will flood your website.

No less than 35 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute, so the competition to get your video seen by viewers is insane. There are tons of high-quality videos that never get more than a few thousand views, and no doubt many more that get even fewer eyeballs.

What to do? First, tailor your video content to what your viewers want and not necessarily to what you want to show them. Always keep the viewer in mind every step of the video making process and put their needs and desires ahead of yours. Next, you've got to vigorously promote your video. Social sites are often the best way to get the word out. And third, realize that it takes time, resources and a good idea to make a video people want to watch and pass on to others. And it takes time and resources to properly promote your video. Don't expect to slap up any old video and watch the sales role in.

Mistake #2 - Thinking you're too small or new to make video work for you and your business.

Just because you need to keep your expectations realistic doesn't mean placing and promoting videos on YouTube can't have an impact on your business. Any business, large or small, can use video to its advantage.

Think about what you like to share with friends and tailor your video accordingly. Even a few thousand views can increase your business, and if you get lucky, you might even create the next video viral sensation.

Mistake #3 - Creating a commercial.

Online video is about engagement with others, not slapping out another “buy my product” commercial.

Think of your video as doing much more than simply selling a product or service. People on YouTube want to consume and share engaging and fun content, so don't give them a 30 minute speech on why your product rocks, because odds are they won't watch it.

Instead, inject fun, personality and pizzazz into your videos. Make them educational, emotional, or thought provoking, or funny, or all four. Ask yourself: If I saw this video, would I send it to my friends? If the answer is no, then keep working on your concept.

Another test to see if you're on the right track: If you were with friends, would you show them the video? If not, then you might want to start over. A video should grab attention and keep the viewer entranced. It should be short – usually less than 5 minutes and preferably less than 2.5 minutes. And it should leave the viewer feeling GLAD they saw it, not glad it's over.

Mistake #4 - Trying too hard.

You might think you need to spend thousands of dollars to get a professional video created, when the fact is an amateur type of video might do just as well, if not better.

People generally don't like “slick” unless it's of a “Hollywood” caliber – and that's expensive. People prefer to watch videos of real people doing real things. To illustrate slick versus real, think of an overly smooth sales person trying to sell you a car – isn't he or she an instant turn off? Now think of an average nice person with a car for sale. She tells you it's a good car, but the heater takes 10 minutes to warm up and the ride's not super smooth. Who do you trust?

Or think about the person trying desperately to impress you with how professional he is and how he knows everything about everything, compared again with the average nice person who readily admits she makes bone-headed mistakes and sometimes says or does the wrong thing. Who do you like better?

Bottom line: Create videos that appeal to your market by making them informational. Educate the viewer (your target audience) on the benefits of buying your product or using your service. Above all, don’t expect to get a gazillion views overnight without massive promotion through social media posting, blogging and article submissions. Be yourself when making the video. After all, business success is about people and relationships. ALWAYS keep the viewer in mind through every step of the process and with time you will be successful.
