I have officially moved this pile of yarn five times. To five separate houses. And no, I still donât know how to crochet. đ«Ł
Iâm currently unpacking my new office (we bought a houseâ yay! đ„ł), and as I pulled this chaotic bundle out of a box, I had to laugh. Itâs been sitting on my shelf for years, taking up physical and mental space because âone day Iâll get around to it.â
As I took a few minutes to untangle it today, it brought me back to a reflection a client shared during a systems mapping session a while back.
We were doing a comprehensive audit of her strategy and backend operationsâlooking at her business holistically to figure out exactly where she should be directing her energy and resources next. Itâs heavy work, and it requires looking at how every single piece connects.
As we were reflecting on the results, she said:
"Doing this systems work is like a ball of yarn. You have to carefully unwind it... you can't just start yanking strings out."
I remember so clearly because I love this metaphor.
When things feel overwhelming or messy behind the scenes, the natural instinct for a lot of business owners is to just start yanking on the nearest string. They want a fast fix, so they buy a new piece of software, scrap a funnel, or change an internal process overnight.
But when you give into that sudden yank... the knot gets tighter.
At Backstage Ops, we help businesses slow to go fast. True operations work isn't about frantically ripping things apart or migrating to the best new system... it's about taking the time to look at the whole picture, finding the right thread, and unwinding it with intention so you don't accidentally pull down the structures supporting you or waste time/ energy/ resources/ etc.
I might never knit that blanket, but Iâm keeping this yarn on my office shelf as a permanent reminder of how we approach the back end of business. (Plus my husband loves when I find an excuse to hang onto my "someday" hobbies đ)
