Why design should lead over profit... every time.
In a recent project bid, I came across an attic space that had something rare: character. The exposed angles, natural light, and open flow gave the space a charm that was hard to replicate. The charm was so unique, that to build walls would truly take away the charm to this space.
The client was considering turning it into two additional bedrooms — which, on paper, made sense to increase property value. But to do so would have required building walls that would enclose the space and ultimately strip away what made it so special in the first place. It would have felt small, chopped up, and—honestly—uninspired.
It’s moments like these that remind me why design must lead before profit.
Yes—adding bedrooms can boost resale value. But the true value of a space comes from how it feels to live in it, how it connects with its architecture, and how it enhances daily life. A design-first approach respects that. Profit-driven decisions alone often sacrifice long-term enjoyment and authenticity for short-term gains.
At INTNT design, my priority is always to elevate a space with intention—whether through clever layout, thoughtful material choices, or preserving what makes the space unique. When design leads, both beauty and value follow. And often, in ways you can’t always measure with a simple dollar amount.
I’d love to hear your thoughts—when have you seen design elevate a project beyond the numbers?
