I had the honor to be the Moderator during this past week’s Lunch Roulette 💛
Attendees had the pleasure of dining and chatting with Former El Paso Mayor, Suzie Azar, and her granddaughter, Amelia.
Suzie lit up the room with her bright personality and purple, pink, and blue-colored hair.
Her resume of accomplishments is a long one. She’s done it all – from running a smoke shop on Tigua land to owning and operating a restaurant to working at Coors to founding the Amigo Airsho to opening a flight school (in which she’s still an instructor)….and not to mention numerous public service terms and philanthropic ventures as well.
Suzie shared the story of her mayoral campaign, in which her opponent negatively dubbed her a “cheerleader.” She then turned the intended insult to her advantage by campaigning with a megaphone and pom poms. Suzie went on to win 65% of the vote and was elected El Paso’s first (and only) woman mayor in 1989.
What is she up to now? “I’m living the dream!” Deemed “Granzie” by her grandchildren (a term of endearment from combining “Suzie” with “Grandma”), Suzie enjoys her time flying, scuba diving, going to Austin often to visit her grandchildren and is looking forward to a trip to Italy and Croatia in the future.
And what does she want her legacy to be? “Public service, flying, and volunteering.”
To date, Suzie has accumulated over 7,700 hours of flying and has no plans of stopping any time soon. In fact, she’s currently teaching her grandchildren how to fly, too.
Suzie is a testament to living life to the fullest, trying new things, and following your dreams.
