A criminal defense attorney paid over $50,000 for a new website and SEO — and didn't own a single asset from it. When he ended the contract and came to us, we went to transfer his site. He didn't have WordPress credentials. The agency did. This is more common than it should be. Credentials go missing. Contracts get written with buyout clauses that require clients to purchase their own permissions when the relationship ends. Before you sign with any agency — regardless of size — vet the company, get your attorney on the fine print, and ask directly: if this relationship ends tomorrow, who owns the assets?
