“Justice is not fulfilled so long as woman is unequal before the law.” - Frances Ellen Watkins Harper⠀

I am grateful for the women like Harper who fought for my right to vote - who marched, wrote, lectured and educated our nation so that today, my voice can be heard. ⠀

Many of them were Black women, like Harper, who continued to have their voices suppressed for decades.

When I stop to think about what Harper and others endured a century ago, it takes my breath away.
Unable to be equally educated. Unable to ride a street car. Unable to vote. And so much more.

Because of their advocacy, I was able to go to college. I could march and make my voice heard on issues that matter to me.
This is a picture from my days at - where I rallied on Capitol Hill with and others in support of student financial aid. ⠀

Today, I am a professor earning a salary. I can hold credit cards and have a home in my name.
I can marry the person I choose and parent my daughter the way I see fit. I can make medical decisions with my doctors. I can write a book and give lectures around the world.⠀

I will never take these rights for granted. And I know we have so much work yet to do.
