Reflecting on my upbringing in a small town, where graduating high school meant being part of a class of around 20, I often hear the same response from people: "It must be so cool to live in such a small town – you must know everyone, and everyone must look out for each other!"
While I take pride in the close-knit values of my small community, I've witnessed these ideals gradually erode over the years. We're still good people, I believe that wholeheartedly, but the world around us has changed.
St. Lawrence County has always been a tapestry of small towns, where my parents reminisce about a time when they truly knew everyone, and everyone knew them. Neighbors helping neighbors was a way of life.
Yet, as I grew up, I saw a different reality unfold. Our county gained notoriety for record numbers of children in foster care, adults grappling with addiction, and the lingering effects of post-COVID isolation that continue to permeate society.
In a small town, we may be physically close, but the truth is, many of us feel isolated in our struggles. It's a paradox of our modern world – together in proximity, yet often alone in our personal battles.
As we navigate these challenges, it's essential to hold onto the essence of community that once defined us. Let's work together to rebuild those bonds, support one another, and restore the sense of belonging that makes small-town life truly special.
I Joined the board of directors for the St. Lawrence Arts Council because I recognized how drastically we needed a togetherness. I wanted to help create a space where we can offer a creative spirit to everyone - from homeschooled children to the people who just need a safe space for a little while.
Join us in making a difference for the Arts Council of St. Lawrence County! As a member of their board of directors, I've seen firsthand the incredible impact of their work in our community, from promoting local artists to fostering a love for the arts among our youth.
Now, we need your help to continue these invaluable initiatives. Your contribution will enable us to fund art programs, support emerging artists, and provide resources to cultivate creativity across our county.
Every donation, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference.
