Stand at any conference booth long enough and you’ll hear the same pitch, word for word, from three different companies.

➡️Excellent customer service.

➡️A stellar experience.

➡️Clients first.

Three booths, three sentences, zero difference.

Customer service is what brings customers back.

It’s not what sets you apart and attracts them in the first place.

Here’s a study that explains why:
⬇️
Hinge Research Institute asked firms to name their competitors.

Then they asked those firms’ own clients who else they’d considered before hiring. The lists barely matched.

Firms only knew 1 out of every 4 companies they were actually being compared to.

If you’re trying to grow, or trying to break into a new market, this can be a problem.

You’re not just competing with the firm you know about.

You’re competing with three more you’ve never heard of, and sounding just like them.

The 10-Minute Authority Gap Assessment shows you where you blend in and where you stand out.

➡️Twenty questions.
➡️One score.
➡️Ten minutes.

Most people walk into a networking event thinking the goal is to meet as many people as possible.

That’s not a very effective strategy.

The businesses that grow effectively using networking use it very differently.

Here are three networking strategy secrets most people never learn.

1️⃣ The goal isn’t meeting people. It’s being remembered.

People meet dozens of professionals at events. Most of them blur together.

If someone can’t quickly explain what you do and who they should send to you, they won’t refer you later.

Clarity makes you memorable.

2️⃣ Referrals don’t come from clients first. They come from referral partners.

Your best referral sources are usually other professionals who serve the same clients you do.

Realtors, attorneys, financial advisors, consultants, HR leaders—people who regularly see the problem you solve.

When they clearly understand what you do, they become a steady source of introductions.

Research shows 92% of people trust referrals from people they know more than any other type of marketing.

That’s why strategic relationships matter so much.

3️⃣ Networking only works if your value is clear.

People can’t send you business if they don’t understand the problem you solve - and why you’re different.

This is exactly what I help professional service providers fix.

I help you clarify your message so when you meet someone at an event, they immediately understand:

• what you do
• who you help
• how you’re different
• who they should send your way

When that happens, networking stops feeling random and starts working like a referral system.

Once upon a time, there was an expert whose business was stuck.

He was a partner at a small accounting practice. Qualified leads and referrals hadn’t been the same since before COVID, and the business wasn’t growing.

He was starting to worry.

So he called me.

I asked what he’d tried:

➡️ Boosted posts
➡️ A Google ad
➡️ SEO keywords
➡️ A website refresh

🚫 None of it worked.

Each tactic came at a different time, for a different reason. Nothing tied them together.

Here’s the problem:

❌ A tactic isn’t a strategy.

An ad, a post, and a new website are pieces of a bigger puzzle. On their own, they can’t fix unclear positioning or a business reputation that doesn’t match your expertise.

You need the thinking behind them:

✅ Who are you trying to reach?
✅ What problem do you solve?
✅ What are your competitors saying?
✅ How is your solution different?
✅ What result do you provide?
✅ How does this support your business goals?

Building a strong business reputation takes skill and experience, just like the work experts do for their clients.

Nobody expects to pass the bar by winging it. Nobody expects to earn a CPA license without training.

This work is no different. It only looks easy because anyone can post or run an ad.

Looking easy and being easy are two different things.

A 2024 survey found that 87% of small businesses with a written plan for these efforts reported success. Only 13% without one did.*

If you know an established service business that’s struggling to get qualified leads and referrals, send them my way.

I’ll build a business reputation for them that makes it easy for people to see, trust, and remember their expertise-so they can charge what they’re worth and grow outside their current circles.

Being skilled and being recognized for it are two different things.

You can have years of experience, do excellent work, and have clients who trust you.

But people who haven’t worked with you haven’t seen any of that yet.

They can only judge your business by what they see and hear. Can they quickly understand what you do? Can they see proof that you do it well? Do other people know how to describe and refer you?

When the way people see your business doesn’t match the quality of your work, you have an Authority Gap.

Getting seen by more people won’t fix it. You need to make your expertise easier to understand, trust, and refer.

The Authority Gap Assessment will help you find what’s missing and what to fix first.

I’m tired of wracking my brain trying to figure out what you do.

I understand why businesses want to sound smart and professional—in their ads, on their websites, on social media, and when they explain what they do in person.

But “professional” and “smart-sounding” language doesn’t sell.

It doesn’t generate referrals, either.

That’s because it can create cognitive overload.

Cognitive overload happens when someone has to work too hard just to follow what you’re saying.

They see big words and long sentences, then have to translate them into simpler language in their own head.

Most people won’t take the time to do that.

So they never get far enough to understand the problem you solve—or why your approach is different from other businesses offering something similar.

And if they don’t understand why they should choose you, they move on.

Clear language doesn’t make you sound less professional.

It makes it easier for people to choose you.

The Authority Gap Assessment can help you identify where your message is creating unnecessary friction—and where it may be weakening your authority.

Is your business growing or is it stalled?

Referrals not coming in like they used to?

I’ve seen it a lot.

What I usually find is a website that has the same description as competitors, random social media content, and a disconnected brand experience.

No viable credibility.

No answers to buyer questions.

Nothing that stands out.

In person, they describe their business differentiation as “excellent customer service.”

They aren’t branded or memorable.

I can’t tell how they’re different or why i should trust them.

That’s why growth stalls.

I do this work for a living. When clients want to grow, they come to me.

I do an entire market and competitive analysis. I do a SWOT to capitalize on strengths, minimize weaknesses, and find opportunities.

Then I build positioning and messaging.

After that, I architect a business reputation that builds credibility, authority, and a cohesive and consistent presence — online and in person.

If growth has stalled for you, or if you know someone who has, I built a free tool for this.

It’s called the Authority Gap Assessment. Takes 10 minutes. Shows you which of 9 gaps might be keeping the business from growing.

People can tell when you’re there just to collect business cards.

They can also tell when you enjoy being part of the room.

I spent the day playing pickleball, laughing, and getting to know more of the good people in my TAB group and Networking in Action.

I also won a prize for having the most fun. Honestly, that was the only award I was qualified to win.😆

(I’m not kidding-watch the video).

The strongest referral relationships usually start this way.

You get to know someone.

You learn how they think.

You see how they treat people.

That matters long before anyone needs to make an introduction.

Thank you to Mile Prospek (The Pickleball Connection, Sign Connextion), Rich Goudy (TAB), and Catherine Dall (Network in Action) and Velocity Pickleball for putting this together.

Thanks Mile for the branded pickleball paddle!!

Last night was our Woodinville Chamber Ambassador meeting, then our networking night.

Before I walked in, I knew what kind of room it was. That decided how I spent my time.

There are three types of networking rooms.

➡️ Buyer rooms.

Your clients are in the room. Trade shows, industry meetups, places where the people who’d hire you actually show up.

➡️ Connector rooms.

These are your referral partners — people who work alongside you but don’t compete with you. They’re also your bridge to platforms and microphones. They’re the ones who can introduce you to the podcast host, the event organizer, the person putting together next year’s speaker lineup.

➡️ Authority rooms.

You’re the one speaking. Podcasts, panels, keynotes. Your buyer is in the audience, and you’re the one they’re watching.

For me, a Chamber networking night is a connector room.

So I wasn’t looking for people to hire me. I was looking to build relationships with referral partners, and with people who could open the door to the stages and platforms I want to be on next.

That’s the difference between working a room and wasting a night.

Most people treat every room the same way. Same pitch, same small talk, same stack of business cards that never gets a follow-up.

That’s why networking sometimes stops working for them.

I’m Antonia Semanskee.

I help business owners figure out which room they’re in and what to do once they get there.

And I get to serve as Ambassador Chair for the Woodinville Chamber , which means I get to watch this play out every week.

If your referrals have slowed down and you’re not sure why, that’s worth a look.

If your social media posts aren’t helping you get clients, then you’re doing it wrong.

Social media isn’t just about getting followers — it’s about showing people you’re good at what you do so they feel confident buying from you.

Research shows that 71 % of consumers are more likely to buy from a brand they follow on social media because they feel like they know and trust them.¹

But here’s the thing…

Posting random content won’t build trust.

Your social media should build your credibility — meaning when someone finds your profile, they should think:

✔ this person knows their stuff
✔ they can help me solve a problem
✔ I want to book a call or buy from them

If your bio and positioning don’t tell people that, they’ll keep scrolling.
