Beautiful flowers. Bright green leafing-out trees. Cars dusted with pollen, busy bees, and sneezing humans. It's Springtime! As we're relishing our earth's rebirth, a cold snap will get our attention--familiarly called Dogwood Winter (late April or early May) when dogwood trees are blooming or Blackberry Winter (mid-May) when the blackberries bloom. A few chilly days and then we can settle into a glorious time of the year. Please take the time to enjoy the visual spectacle that Mother Nature is offering in these socially tumultuous times.

I was nervous about going to dog heaven; what would I do without sheep to tend all day? The St. Bernard that greeted me assuaged my worries. "Just take a few days for your aches and pains to go away and then you can choose to spend your time as you wish--you could take a language class, paint , or join the storytellers." Boy, did that dalmatian have some exciting experiences . (I never listened to the stray-dog episodes after dark.) Watching the puppies romp was relaxing--they hadn't learned to hate yet. One day, I asked about the wall. "Oh, that's for the poodles. They don't want to associate with us and they make sure the poodle puppies stay behind the wall too."

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the death of Jesus Christ. Superstitions admonish you to avoid doing the following today. Do not handle nails or iron tools. Do not break ground or plant anything. Do not wash clothes. No tree climbing for children and no work for adults. Don't eat anything containing vinegar or nettles. (I can't imagine avoiding nettles will be a problem.)

With days getting longer, it may be time to think about buying new sunglasses. Style is important but more so is that they provide protection against UV rays. Sunglasses that simply reduce brightness with darkened lenses make the pupil open wider to see better and allows more UVs in!

Listen to your Mama. "Ignore bullies." But that's hard to do when they're carrying assault weapons. "Ignore temper tantrums." But maybe Mother Nature's devastating outbursts are her way of asking for help. As technology and society have become more complicated, maybe it's time to pay attention.

This first week of Spring has become a backdrop for violence in America by Americans. Another mass shooting on a sunny afternoon in Boulder Colorado makes it the 7th in a week where four or more people were injured or killed by guns. The emotional devastation to the families and communities directly affected is incalculable. What happened to our freedom to safely go the grocery store and buy a loaf of bread?

Finland, for the 4th year, is ranked as the happiest country in the world, according to the latest World Happiness Report. (Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland, and the Netherlands round out the list of the top five happiest countries.) Finns have always ranked highly when it comes to mutual trust which is recognized as having been a major factor in protecting people from the devastating repercussions of COVID-19. Who do you trust?

St Patrick couldn't have driven snakes into the sea. And pagans take offense when it is postulated that the snake legend is a metaphor for the elimination of paganism from the Emerald Isle. (He certainly facilitated the spread of Christianity but he did not eliminate paganism.) The fact is that Ireland is snakeless because glaciers cut the land off from opportunities for snakes to migrate to the island. Tomorrow is a day to toast Ireland with "Erin Go Bragh"--an anglicisation of an Irish phrase meaning "Ireland till the end of time." Glaciers or not.

Trypanophia is an excessive or irrational fear of injections. The condition, inherited or learned , affects 10% of the population. One in five people fear needles to some degree. Children are especially vulnerable; with age and experience, the fear subsides. Perhaps that's the rationale for repeatedly showing close-up examples of needles going into arms delivering the COVID vaccine. With repeated exposures, we will become desensitized to the injection process.

International Women's Day was a perfect opportunity for President Biden to announce the nomination of two women to advance to the position of Four-star General. Apparently, these accomplished women had been approved by the Pentagon last year but the decision was made to delay their nomination until after the 2020 presidential election. Not everyone is ready to support women challenging a traditionally male-dominated bastion. But, hey, we've come a long way!

Anglophile or interested in real life soap opera? Harry and Meghan will be offering a behind the scenes look at life as royals. Oprah will be interviewing these current residents of Santa Barbara California on Sunday, March 7. Revelations prove to be interesting for all those little girls who dreamed of being a princess one day. Remember the children's story, "Three wishes"? Be careful what you wish for.
