Frequently asked questions – How much will my new website cost?

This question, in one way, shape or form, is asked by every potential client during our initial conversation. Sometimes its the first thing out of their mouth - never a good sign! Sometimes its only brought up when I ask about budget.

The real answer is generally "It depends!". It depends on what the site is being used for, it depends on how complex the site is, it depends on the additional functionality required with a site to meet the client's goals. Many of these are not even known during that first meeting so arriving at a project cost is often a matter of iteration - starting from a known position and working your way up or down to arrive at a final price.

Does your website need a privacy policy?
The collecting of direct and indirect contact information on a website has become a big issue at both the state and federal level. Over a dozen states have proposed or already are implementing privacy laws to protect the Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of its citizens. If you are collecting information on your site via a contact form then the answer is almost certainly Yes, especially if you are collecting info from overseas visitors and/or California. New Jersey has its own Privacy Law on the books and its expected to pass within the next couple of years.
A statement saying "your privacy is very important to us" won't cut it going forward!

We’ve noticed a big up-tick in website hacking attacks over the last week or so. The fact that this coincides with summer vacations is not incidental - the bad guys are also clever guys so they try to get into sites when the owners have their attentions elsewhere. One of the sites that I manage reported 1256 brute force attacks in one calendar day in July!
My advice is two-fold:
1. Check your website and make sure it's running correctly and that nothing has been added (or edited) without your knowledge.
2. Install a security plugin to monitor security on an ongoing basis. All the sites I manage have a robust security plugin installed that has successfully deflected over 99.9% of attacks over the years.

Domain registration and hosting and the difference between them continue to be one of the most MISUNDERSTOOD components of putting a website together for a client. The issue has been created from the practice of bigger hosting companies of bundling the components into a package deal. Initially this seems like a great idea - one (or two) less things for a business owner to worry about. But extricating oneself from such a package deal can be a royal PITA! How many admins are too many?
My philosophy with websites is "simpler is better" and that extends to creating users & admins. I keep the number of full access admins to a minimum - generally no more than 2 or 3 per website (with strong passwords, of course!).
I was asked to look at a website this week that had 8 full access admins - 7 of whom weren't actually employed by the company, rather their marketing agency. I thought this was too many and told the prospective client that - just think of the security implications of all those "stray" admins who are not even employees!

It's always great to hear client success stories. I heard recently from a client that just started with a Google Ads program with DSM. The program has been running two months and the client reported that their business DOUBLED during that time from $10,000/month to $20,000/month. Their outlay was minimal - less than $500/month. Improving website speed is a huge topic within the WordPress community. To be honest most end-users and clients don't notice the difference but Mr. Google does notice and gives a virtual "thumbs up" to sites that load fast. As a WordPress website builder I'm just starting to experiment with WordPress's Block Editor and I have to say that so far I'm very pleasantly surprised at the results - sites load much faster when using the Block Editor as opposed to the page builders I use. Saying that - the Block Editor is still a pain in the neck to use and I wouldn't recommend it yet for a beginner or amateur, but the results speak for themselves.

I feel the need for speed!
Google has laid out new "requirements" for acceptable practices for websites to be found via their search engine. Google's Core Web Vitals revolve around one thing - speed! And the faster the better!! While on-site elements such as video and large images can slow down a website the biggest factor in improving speed lies in the hosting platform you use.
