Register today for Triangle Business Journal's Mentoring Monday on February 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Embassy Suites, 201 Harrison Oaks Blvd, Cary, NC.

At every stage of my career, I had a mentor. I sought out people who energized and inspired me. They took the time to engage in meaningful conversations that helped me learn and grow. They didn't always say "yes" and often helped me to think more critically about the future. The solutions they offered weren't quick ones and often challenged my assumptions.

My favorite mentors helped me discover my underlying passions and calling in life. They have been anchors who guided me in volunteer efforts and became lifelong friends.

As I lean into a new season of life, it's time for me to offer the same value of mentoring that I received from others. I want to inspire people to become fuller versions of who they are. At the end of February, I have the honor of being selected for the Triangle Business Journal's Mentoring Monday. This opportunity is a little different than other mentoring relationships because of the speed of the event. I am hoping that the connections made will linger longer than the 15 minutes offered for each round.

The shorter rounds allow time to focus on character instead of job skills and competency. As we each become more self-aware of the value we can add to each other, we can truly become better in our jobs as well as in our relationships. Won't you join me? The link to register will be in the comment section.

Jefferson Fisher’s book “The Next Conversation” offers solid strategies and tips on ways to argue less and talk more. Jefferson Fisher reminds us that our words have ripple effects and offers tips on how powerful a pause can be before you respond.

It’s important to set goals for conversation. Don’t think of the conversation as a win or lose situation. “Winning means that you’ve likely lost something far more valuable – their trust, their respect, or worse, the connection. The only thing you’ve won is their contempt.”

The next step is to set values for a conversation. The overall aim is to connect, share, and grow stronger relationships. Jefferson highlighted his values and I think these two are good ones:

Where there is room for kindness, I will use it.
If I can’t be a bridge, I’ll be a lighthouse.

Read more in Liza's FRS blog and be sure to buy the book on Amazon.com or local booksellers.

Whether you are prepping for your next performance review or considering a new opportunity, use these 4 tips from our CEO Liza Weidle to build success in 2025:

✔️ Consistently document your wins and accomplishments to compile a record of your work. Identify one method, whether it’s pen and paper or a Google doc and make monthly entries. I picked a Friday afternoon when things are a little slower at work.

✔️ Be specific in goals. Did your impact raise performance 10% or grow sales? Stretch your documentation beyond the headline projects that your team already knows about.

✔️ Continuous innovation. This could look like taking courses to learn a new skill. This year I am learning about Ham Radios and understanding the process to become licensed. It's been on my "tada" list for some time. My company is FRS which is primarily "For Ruth's Sake" in honor of my Grandmother, but also Family Radio Service and in the plans as we continue to develop our Weidle Timber farm.

✔️ Build a strong network. For me this is as much about helping the community as it is about business and one of the reasons I became a The Rotary Club of Cary member.

What's on your "tada" list for 2025?

Weather forecast for the triangle area is for cold followed by even colder temperatures. To prepare, we wanted to share our favorite movies from 2024.

The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling tops our list because it highlights unsung heroes in the movie industry - the stuntmen ❤️

Below is a top 10 movie list. What was your favorite movie and go to snack?
