A few years ago, I had the great luck to be asked to write a series of "transformation" stories for Children's Mercy Hospital's website. The stories were part of the hospital's fall campaign, and each one told an amazing tale of a child's illness and recovery -- and I don't say "amazing" because of my writing. "Amazing" describes these mighty kids and the dedicated health staff at CMH.
Actually, their stories are MORE than amazing. Each one is AMAZEBALLS amazing! But one in particular has stayed with me in the 2 years since I wrote it. I don't know why I haven't shared it (or any of the other stories), because it is literally jaw-dropping, and it is totally worth the 3-4 minutes it will take you to read it.
Following is the first graf. I hope it pulls you in to read the rest -- because the rest is AMAZING!
Jonathan Pirotte has spent the last year learning how to crawl, stand on his own and drink from a straw. He has mastered the ability to feed himself and take steps with the help of a walker. He can be ornery, giggly and grumpy. And while none of those descriptions or milestones might sound like something to applaud for a 3-year-old, Jonathan is not your typical toddler.
He only has half a brain.
