Success comes when ideas merge with process. Process provides outcome. Outcomes are affected by input. Input sparks new ideas. New ideas change the process, which alters the outcome that affects satisfaction.

This is why each objective needs to be clearly defined. If not, scope becomes expansive and expectations don’t get met.

Fine Art Realism — different constructions of the same subject.

When donning my photographer persona for portraiture, I allow people to remain people.

It sounds simple.

The resulting photographs don’t need to invent a different human being. This is a philosophical distinction between interpretation and alteration. The artistic transformation happens relative to the subject rather than to it.

Perception changes even though the subject hasn’t fundamentally changed. In color one might notice style first. In another, thought first. In another, her first.

These are reactions produced by intentional choices.

Fine Art Realism accepts that a photograph can never be completely objective. I choose the moment, frame, light, perspective and treatment. Rather than disguising those choices, the work uses them deliberately while remaining faithful to the reality of the subject.

The visual device connecting through this sequence is that the eyes gradually become available.

Visibility - Presentation - Perception -Identity

The subject does not change. Our perception of her does.

Across four portraits, color, monochrome, styling, concealment and gaze progressively alter the viewer’s understanding of the same person. The photographs make no claim that one interpretation is more truthful than another. Instead, they explore a central tension of Fine Art Realism: reality remains constant while perception rarely does.

Muse in Pink

AZH Photography — Fine Art Realism — the way a singular presence becomes a recurring visual constant inside an extraordinarily designed environment, and how that constant changes our perception of the space.

Across the series, the pink dress is simultaneously subject, color field, scale reference, repeating motif, and visual punctuation.

Sometimes it harmonizes with the room, the pink walls, red carpets, floral patterns, upholstered furniture and drapery.

Elsewhere it collides with turquoise, green, yellow and black-and-white geometry. In the long corridors and large rooms, the figure becomes almost a small chromatic mark within an architectural photograph. In the closer photographs, the relationship reverses and the architecture becomes part of a portrait.

That oscillation is what makes the series interesting.

We were inspired to talk on this topic, as a business owner with years of work, retention and growth insight — we’ll keep it short and welcome your thoughts.

This is a process. One step follows the next. Putting the cart ahead of the horse can stunt momentum.

If one of these phases falters, refocus on the previous phase and you’ll likely find the missing piece of the puzzle needed to progress.

We regularly see marketers making absolute statements about how their “viral” (paid engagement) drives attendance to events — when in reality, the event is driving the opportunity for obtaining social content.

When digging deeper, there is often no correlating metric between this social visibility/engagement and who actually shows up, spends money, or makes referrals that creates growth or sustainability.

One thing we’ve learned over many years in the event space is that every target audience is fickle, discerning, ever-changing, and turns over quickly.

Another thing we’ve learned is that FOMO is not a reliable call-to-action driver. It creates negative feelings within oneself. Creating anxiety or disappointment is not a great way to earn anyone’s affinity.

Affinity is sustainable…when the experience delivers the first time, evolves each time and improves over time.

An agency mindset of telling the public what they need may work in the commodity market, but in the realm of tapping into a families shrinking disposable income for experiential activities, what they want and like drives whether they will show up for you.

If your goal is visibility, awareness, engagement, sales, attendance, unique experience, and/or profit, be sure to ask for how the expense will create the appropriate ROI.

We spend so much time helping others tell their story, we haven’t typically made sure ours was known. Times are changing and so are we — with more, regular content aimed at inspiring, informing and educating. Let’s connect on whatever you see as relevant.

Stories are all around us.

Three generations of local, family-owned passion has made Bob Miller Interiors a staple in the region for 42 years — making for a lot of “story” to tell.

Formerly a “cornerstone” of Maumee, Anne and family have made a move to 210 Mechanic St. in Waterville. Thursday’s ribbon cutting culminated in a packed house full of family, old friends, new neighbors, community support and “good company”…literally.

Helping others tell their story comes in many forms. Media engagement, photojournalism and digital content was our role for this milestone, and we’re so happy to have been asked to help.

If you’re looking for professional interior design insight, call Bob Miller Interiors (in Waterville), and tell ‘em we sent you. — AZH
