Here is a featuring the wonderful . Jameela Jamil is an incredibly talented actress and advocate of women's rights, body positivity, and health. I choose Ms. Jamil to be the subject of this collage because of her advocacy surrounding Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). EDS is a collection of connective tissue disorders, affecting the joints, tendons, and ligaments of the body. It is often invisible, meaning individuals who have it often appear perfectly healthy despite suffering internally. The zebra used in this collage is the symbol for EDS because it represents the unexpected. According to ehlers-danlos.com, it stems from the saying taught in medical school, “When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don’t expect to see a zebra,” or, in other words, don't diagnose a rare disorder when it may be a common one. EDS is a relatively unknown and unresearched disorder, so it often goes undiagnosed. The symbol of the zebra is a reminder that rare medical disorders still need to be considered despite being uncommon. This topic is close to my heart because, like Ms. Jamil, my best friend has EDS. It takes perseverance to manage because the severity of the symptoms can fluctuate from day to day or hour to hour. Awareness needs to be raised about EDS so that strides can be made in the treatment of it. To learn more, visit https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/what-is-eds/.
