F O R T H E P E O P L E

Some leaders are shaped by title.
Others are shaped by the people they serve in it.

I had the opportunity to photograph , a local candidate for City Commissioner Seat 5, and spend real time in conversation about community, accountability, and the work it takes to create change that actually lasts. The care, intention, and people-first mindset she brings to the table is the kind of energy our city needs more of.

Antionette D. Carroll is a civic designer and strategist who uses branding and design systems as tools for real-world impact. Through Creative Reaction Lab, she has shown that design can move beyond visuals and into the work of healing communities, improving public health, and creating more equitable systems.

Her work reminds us that design holds responsibility. That the choices we make as designers can shape access, understanding, and opportunity. Today, we celebrate Antionette D. Carroll for leading with empathy, building with intention, and proving that Black designers continue to shape not just culture—but the communities we live in.

Brandon Breaux is a creative director and visual architect whose work helped define the visual language of a generation in hip-hop. Best known for shaping the early visual identity of Chance the Rapper, his designs proved that album art and branding could be just as emotionally resonant and culturally impactful as the music itself.

Through a minimal, honest aesthetic, Brandon showed independent artists that strong visual identity doesn’t require excess—it requires intention. His work helped set a new standard for how artists present themselves, proving that authenticity in design can move culture forward. Today, we honor Brandon Breaux for building visuals that helped shape an era.

Yinka Ilori is a designer whose work transforms spaces into stories. Through bold color, pattern, and cultural symbolism, he has reimagined how design communicates in public—turning everyday environments into experiences rooted in joy, heritage, and accessibility.

Here’s Day 1 of the series and we’re kicking things off with Tré Seals. He is redefining what typography can be and what it can carry. Through Vocal Type, he has turned letterforms into living archives—embedding Black protest history, civil rights movements, and cultural memory directly into type. His work proves that design isn’t just visual, it’s historical, educational, and deeply powerful.

From political campaigns to cultural institutions, Tré’s typefaces speak louder than words alone. They preserve legacy, challenge systems, and remind us that Black history isn’t only written—it’s designed. His impact reaches far beyond fonts, shaping how culture is documented and how future generations will see themselves reflected in design.

Today, we honor Tré Seals for building tools that tell our stories with intention, pride, and purpose.

Last year, I created a series titled “Graphic Designers in Black History”, highlighting some truly iconic designers whose work laid the foundation for the industry as we know it.

This year, the focus shifts to the present. To honor the designers who are paving the way in the modern era of graphic design. The ones leaving their mark, blazing trails, and inspiring those around them through branding, typography, album art, digital experiences, and experimental work.

This series is a celebration of excellence in motion. A recognition of designers whose influence is still unfolding, with a hopeful eye toward the futures they're building and the many more creatives who will rise, thrive, and one day be honored alongside them.
Black design history is still being written-and this is part of that story.
