Thinking about starting a 501(c)(3) nonprofit? Here's where to begin.
Many people have a great idea for helping their community, but aren't sure how to turn that idea into a legitimate nonprofit organization. Here are the basic steps:
✅ 1. Define Your Mission. Be clear about the problem you want to solve and who you want to serve.
✅ 2. Choose a Name. Make sure your organization's name is available in your state.
✅ 3. Form a Board of Directors. Most states require a board to govern the nonprofit. Choose people who are passionate about your mission and bring diverse skills.
✅ 4. Incorporate Your Nonprofit. File Articles of Incorporation with your state's business office.
✅ 5. Obtain an EIN. Apply for a free Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.
✅ 6. Create Bylaws. Your bylaws explain how your organization will operate, including board responsibilities and governance.
✅ 7. Apply for 501(c)(3) Status. Submit Form 1023 or Form 1023-EZ (if eligible) to the IRS to apply for federal tax-exempt status.
✅ 8. Register for State Requirements. Depending on your state, you may need to register for charitable solicitation, state tax exemption or other licenses.
Starting a nonprofit is about much more than paperwork — it's about building a strong foundation for lasting impact.
