Here are 6 tips for writing a great thank you card to your guests!

❤️ Send handwritten thank you cards.
Almost everything we do these days is digital, so there’s something extra special about receiving an old-fashioned handwritten letter in the post!

❤️ Choose your stationery carefully.
You don’t want to write your wedding thank you cards with a blue office pen on plain printer paper. (We know you would never!) Pick up a set of your favorite thank you cards and pick up a set of special (or at least comfortable) pens.

❤️ Decide on the appropriate greeting.
Choose which greeting to use (hello, hi, dear, etc.) and, while this may seem obvious, but be sure to spell the guest’s name right. You should tailor your greeting to suit the guest you’re writing to. If they’re a close friend you can use “Hello” or “Hi,” but “Dear” is more formal.

❤️ Refer to their gift.
If they’ve given you a gift, refer to the specific gift and how you’re using it and loving it. When you’re thanking someone for a monetary gift, don’t mention the amount, but do mention how you plan to spend it, ie. on your honeymoon or to go toward your new house.

❤️ Keep it short and sweet.
Your message doesn’t have to be long to be meaningful, so keep it concise and close your message with an appropriate sign off. This will depend on who you’re writing to. “With love” is most appropriate for your closest relatives and friends. “Thank you again” is appropriate for anyone else, but you should choose whatever feels right!

❤️ Sign your names.
Similar to your greeting and closing lines, you can decide how you want to sign your names based on who you’re writing to. For close friends and family, you can simply sign your first names. For everyone else, use your full names, which will be a fun novelty if you’ve just taken your spouse’s last name!

Finally, let's talk colours! 🎉

You may be able to order your invitations in a wide variety of colours. While a lot of shops only offer white and off-white options, others are able to print on a wide range of bright colours. This would depend on the shop and the type of materials they use, so it’s usually best to speak with your designer or preview the options before committing — especially if you have a specific look in mind.

This may or may not be something you’ve given a lot of thought to yet...

And that is the what your invitations are made of.

They can range in anything from a standard matte cardstock to 100% cotton to even something like solid acrylic blocks. Each having its own style and mood 💕

That said, each type of material has its limitations when it comes to printing techniques.

For example, letterpress (This is where your design is etched onto a printing plate and then inked and pressed onto your paper) usually uses cotton card to achieve the pillowy impression it’s known for, but it’s rare to find hot foil on cotton.

On the other hand, you’re likely to only be able to use something like thermography or etching on solid acrylic.

I would like to share some insight on the paper options for wedding stationery!

When it comes to your wedding stationery and, really, any special event invitations, there are a lot of printing options to consider 💕

First, you have your 4 major printing techniques, then you’ve got your actual paper selections, your envelopes and, of course, any design treatments.

The “weight” of your paper or card is essentially how thick it is. Typically, thicker feels (and is) more expensive and higher-end✨ where lighter papers feel cheaper. That said, each printing technique has its limitations on how light or heavy your invitations can be.

Paper weight can also be super confusing because each type of paper (text weight, cardstock, etc) each have their own basis weights, so you will see an 80lb text weight and an 80lb cardstock weight, even though they are nowhere close to the same thickness ✨ Because of this, I recommend comparing paper stock using the “gsm” measurement where possible, as it’s standardized across paper types and categories.

I personally use a 300gsm (or 110lb) card for my invitations. I find this works best with my foil stamping machine, offers a beautiful impression and gives a high-end feel to the completed suite. I hope this helps when dreaming up your ideal wedding invitation suite!
