My entire adult life, I’ve avoided speaking.

Yes, if someone asked me to speak, I would, but actually pursuing it as a career? That was a no.

“I don’t like how my voice sounds.”
“I don’t like the way I look.”
“Why wouldn’t anyone pay to listen to me?”
Blah.
Blah.
Blah.

The truth is, deep inside, I knew speaking was a calling. I also knew in order to do it well, I had to pursue it right.

Now, 25+ years later, I am crystal clear what I am called to do.

Simply put, I help leaders grow in confidence and impact in their purpose. That’s the real endgame.

The business word for confidence is self-efficacy; purpose is personal brand, and the business translation of my body thought leadership is a concept I call Brand Augmentation.

The core is still there though. I want you to
know, grow and thrive in your purpose and create cultures that embody that.

There are three things killing your company culture. Which one can you identify with the most?

1. Your Mission Statement
Having a mission statement is great, but a mission-based culture is better. Mission-based cultures are cultures with a mission hyper integrated into the fabric of the company’s people and operations. Is your team clear on your mission? Are your operational processes audited from that mission? These are elements of a mission- based culture.

2. Your Onboarding Process
A contagious company culture starts at onboarding. According to research by Glassdoor, ”great employee onboarding can improve employee retention by 82%.” How is your onboarding process? Have you audited it recently? Are your turnover rates exceptionally high for your industry? These are a few questions to consider.

3. Your Communication
There is perhaps no greater threat to corporate culture than communication gaps. According to HR Strategist, “57% of employees report not being given clear directions and 69% of managers are not comfortable communicating with the employees in general.” Communication is obviously a huge driver of culture.

You deserve a raise! But before you go after it, make sure you are asking the right way. Here are 4 things to consider:

1. Collect your receipts
Before you ask for a raise, create a digital or physical portfolio of all of your accomplishments. This should include:
> Testimonials from clients
> Awards you have received
> Quantitative results from projects you completed
> Any data that supports how you have directly increased efficiency, reduced costs or grew profits

2. Find your money
Leave no room for your raise to be denied. Find the money for them.

For example, if there is a role or project the company is hiring for and you have the skill set to do it in addition to your current role, consider proposing a new hybrid role with more pay.

3. Anchor your ask
Don’t go blindly into your ask - anchor it! An anchor helps you qualify the amount you are asking for. Some examples of anchors include:

1. Pay rates of the same role in similar-sized cities
2. Inflation, if you haven’t had a raise comparatively to the rising cost of living
3. Company expansion or growth

4. Make the ask
Ready for the ask? Here are a few tips to help you:
> Make it in person. If possible, set up the meeting face-to-face
> Quantify your impact before asking. Creating a presentation would be even better
> Ask for a range vs. a number. A range gives you room to negotiate
> Get it in writing. Once the raise has been approved, make sure you get the terms in writing

The unique packaging of your contagious mission, core values, reputation, and experience to solve unique problems for a specific audience.

Instead of just using your resume to attract the right career, try this:

1. Buy your name as a .com domain and connect it to your LinkedIn profile or personal website. This makes it easier to be found online.
2. Create a blog on WordPress, write articles on Medium, or answer questions on Quora about your industry. Thought leadership on blogs and social media gets the highest search results.
3. View your Facebook profile from someone’s account who isn’t your friend. Are you comfortable with what you see is public information? If not, adjust your privacy settings.
