Check out the new issue of Getting Inky, with some talk about the Oriental brush and how we move with it and work it in to our rhythms.

It’s a versatile and precise tool that is uniquely complex in its capabilities.

Getting Inky is posted! This week my workload is a bit unforgiving, so I'm sharing one from the archives with additional notes and images. The subject of writing on a grid applies to everyone who picks up the tool to lay down ink and letters.

Sometimes we use the grid, sometimes we avoid it, but we're always are aware of it.

Getting Inky is up! This week I’ve updated an article from the archives to share with you, about the many reasons we are drawn to lettering and tend to remain fascinated by this endeavor for a lifetime.

My favorite bullet points about the importance of studying organized handwriting.

Getting Inky is ready! This week I write about about Josef Albers and how his color work changed our understanding of the visual world.

The groundbreaking book by Josef Albers opened the eyes of the world to a more comprehensive visual experience.

Check out my new Getting Inky post, sharing the prehistoric background of Notan, with early marks leading up through the timeline of development. If we return to the past for inspiration, we learn from the ancestors, who saw the world and processed it into graphic form just as we do.

Strong, equal contrast of shape against shape has power, and also represents power.

If you read and scroll down, there is a chart of Ainu pattern elements that are useful to the designer.

In prehistorical art and ancient artifacts, we see an affinity for decorative pattern, rhythm, and use of dark/light contrasts.

My new Getting Inky post is now live! Today I talk about and illustrate how the understanding of Notan is fundamental to making and appreciating visual art of any kind.

How does the visual artist shape their play? What drives the artist toward their final form of balance and equilibrium?

A new Getting Inky post is available! This week the subject is the Dada movement and how the use of letterform in art was revolutionized. This historical deep dive is one of my favorite eras and is based on a slideshow I produced in 2005.

Excerpted quote:

“To think that Dada will ever die is absurd. Dada will always emerge anew one way or another, always when too much stupidity has amassed.” — Kurt Schwitters

"Chance is the only way to avoid control of the rational." —Marcel Duchamp

My new Getting Inky post is all about Protest and Activism, and how handlettering comes into play with the "I MEAN IT!" message.

Giving a voice to passions, the handwritten word is close to home.

My Getting Inky post for this week is about the theory and practice of the seven principles of Gestalt in visual art. Illustrated with some interesting images.

See the word, read the explanation, use it in your work.

Check out my new Getting Inky post, which revisits the Notan principle. I’ve just completed writing my new course on the Dark-Light Principle of Design that launches mid-July at Stanford Continuing Studies, so it's good to read it now in case you want to join in!

The ancient design principle of dark and light is bedrock for designers.
