Don’t expect images like these from your next MRI scan…. In his ongoing limbic system studies, Dr. Denis Ducreux is generating evocative MRI images of the emotional and memory portions of our brains. A video of the whole brain using his specialized analytical process is available at: https://www.medgadget.com/2019/05/radiology-professor-creates-beautiful-art-using-mri-scanner.html.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can produce a great deal of data about the tissues it images. Controlling how an MRI scans and then analyzing its data in

Findings from a new study conducted by researchers from NYU School of Medicine investigated common myths about sleep and how to dispel them. Rankings were based on harm and scientific evidence. Two top misperceptions were that five hours of night time sleep was sufficient and that alcohol consumption improved one’s ability to sleep. The authors recommended seven hours of nightly sleep in a consistent schedule to reduce sleep deficit related health issues and avoiding alcohol use at night to achieve deep sleep. As reported by the BBC World News Service earlier this month, quantum sensing is a transformative technology that, at the subatomic particle level, vastly improves our ability to understand and interact with the world at large. One potential use is faster and more diverse disease detection with greater resolution than MRI scanning. Read the full article at: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-47294704.

Quantum sensing could let us see what's underground, detect diseases earlier, even track a submarine.

Scientists have long known that tumors have many pockets of high acidity, usually found deep within the tumor where little oxygen is available. However, a new study from MIT researchers has found that tumor surfaces are also highly acidic, and that this acidity helps tumors to become more invasive a...

Demand for monitoring and wearable data tracking is growing substantially. Which technology should an individual, medical professional, or researcher choose to best meet their needs? A recent article from Nature proposes a framework for analyzing these measurement technologies using three application contexts: Clinical Trials / Research, Healthcare, and Wellness/Fitness.

How big is the market? As noted in the Nature article, the number of connected wearables is forecast to nearly triple from 2016 through 2021, when more 50 million individuals worldwide may be using digital devices.

Getting sufficient sleep is an ongoing problem in Western cultures. Sleep-deprived individuals account for billions in lost productivity every year and have increased prevalence of chronic health issues compared with those who sleep seven or more hours a night according to CDC statistics. “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker is an engaging well-researched read that documents the benefits and consequences. For another opinion, see: https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2018/06/20/richard-smith-why-we-sleep-one-of-those-rare-books-that-changes-your-worldview-and-should-change-society-and-medicine/.

One of the professors at Edinburgh Medical School, where I was taught from 1970-76, was a world expert on sleep, but I remember hearing little about sleep at medical school. [...]More...
