On this day, November 15, 1805; the Lewis & Clark Expedition reached the Pacific shore. Our 3rd President, Thomas Jefferson sent Army Captain Meriwether Lewis to explore the recently acquired land from the Lousiana Purchase in 1803. Lewis then selected William Clark as second in command for the great expedition. After many months of preparation, stocking supplies and hiring extra hands for the voyage including Native American guides, they set off on May 14, 1804, from Camp DuBois in Illinois. Following their own mapping of the entire purchase and finding a path to the Pacific, the expedition returned to St. Louis with all of their notes and sketches to update Jefferson with what they discovered.

Its summer time again, and the heat is on! If you enjoy staying inside with the a/c turned up on days like this, then thank a printer. No, seriously. No joke! It was the Sackett & Wilhelms Lithography and Printing Company in Brooklyn, NY that had a problem in 1902. Their paper would keep changing sizes due to the humidity, which caused registration problems when doing color printing. After many failed attempts at a remedy, they hired a young engineer fresh out of college to solve the problem. His name, Willis Carrier. And as Paul Harvey would say, now you know the rest of the story. On July 17, 1902 his contraption to "control the climate" was fired up, and cold dry air was blowing in the printing company. Just like main frame computers compared to desktop computers, the first a/c was the size of a school bus. But it solved the printers problem and soon the presses were rolling again. The company that Mr. Carrier started of course is still with us today.

In today's world of sound bites and 24 hour news, we have a hard time understanding how our ancestors received news. No invention increased man's knowledge more than the printing press. But still, the news itself traveled slowly. It was more than a 100 years after this invention that the worlds first newspaper was started in Germany. The next big time saver came 300 years later with the telegraph, followed shortly by the telephone. But these devices mostly only shared the news with a few at a time who then had to repeat it somehow, either by word or in print. It was the invention of the radio that brought instant news to the masses. With this thought, I found these old original broadcasts of D-Day. If you love history, then please take the time in your busy schedule and listen to the allied invasion as our ancestors heard it. Very interesting:

On this day in 1925, the Scopes Monkey trial ended with the conviction of High School science teacher John Scopes for teaching evolution in his classroom. The state of Tennessee had passed a law forbidding evolution teaching in public schools just a few months earlier. The law read to "teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals" is forbidden. Scopes was fined $100.

How far we have fallen, when today the exact opposite is true in our public schools. And not only in Tennessee, but nation wide too. Teachers can now NOT teach Divine Creation of man at all. The damage our politicians have done to America is staggering. Mainly the Democrat party, but the Republicans are just as guilty for conforming to secular humanism ideology instead of fighting it.

D-Day, June 6, 1944

I had a neighbor, whom is passed now; tell me some interesting experiences he had in the war. He laid communication lines and went in on D-Day+2. He said the bodies were still on the beaches, and they were stacked up like cord wood as far as he could see. Another adventure he had was when he was laying wire with a buddy across a wide open field when they came under German fire. They ran to the only building in this field, which was a deserted old bakery. With no weapons and the Germans on their trail, they crawled in a brick oven to hide. After what seemed like hours of artillery and small arms fire (but was only a few minutes), the noise finally stopped. They remained in the oven for a few more hours just to be safe, and then emerged. The bakery was completely gone, just the oven and some chimney remained.

There is no explanation why some survive, and others fall. Other than we are all part of a greater plan that only the creator knows in this lifetime. God Bless the United States of America, and God Bless our Troops, wherever they are!

"A day that will live in infamy"! 75 Years ago today marks the beginning of the United States entry into WWII. We pay respect to ALL of the brave men and women who wear the uniform today, and a special salute to those of the greatest generation. They went from the grapes of wrath to the beaches of Normandy without a complaint. They liberated the world from tyranny and evil, and they viewed it as simply having a job to do. After being victorious in this calling, they returned home and built the greatest economy the world had ever seen. God Bless the United States of America!
