This is great if it’s true!
There are better ways to fuel our nation's data needs than by paving over our agricultural land, exhausting our precious water resources, and destroying the state we live and call home.
Samsung is exploring a radically different approach to AI infrastructure: placing data-center facilities offshore, where surrounding seawater could provide a naturally abundant heat sink for cooling.
Cooling is one of the biggest challenges facing modern AI data centers because powerful GPUs generate enormous amounts of heat. Conventional facilities can require millions of gallons of freshwater depending on their cooling technology, creating particular problems in drought-prone regions.
An offshore system could potentially reduce dependence on freshwater while also freeing data centers from some land constraints. However, marine corrosion, storms, underwater cables, maintenance and environmental impacts remain major engineering challenges before floating data centers can operate at large commercial scale.
