“OH NO WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT?!?”

the new logo is obviously the thing everyone is talking about..

BUT i think the bigger story is everything happening behind the scenes.

they’re not just swapping out a wordmark and calling it a day.

they’re changing how the speedmark is used, expanding the color palette, introducing darker tones, changing the typography, and starting to separate the feel of divisions like racing from mclaren automotive.

and that tells you a lot.

mclaren doesn’t need to prove that it’s fast.

what they seem to be working on now is making the brand feel more established, more refined, and less dependent on bright orange and futuristic styling to get attention.

and honestly, that makes sense.

when you’re selling cars at this level, people aren’t just buying horsepower.

they’re buying the story, the history, the badge, and everything that comes with it.

mclaren already has all of that.

they’re just finally making it a BIGGER part of the brand.

so… do YOU like the new logo?

mclaren logo. mclaren rebrand. mclaren branding. automotive branding. luxury branding. logo redesign. brand identity design. car branding. visual identity.

listen, i’m NOT really a fan of the literal logos and in the past i’ve explicitly advised against them…

BUT there are the rare situations when using the obvious choice has its advantages.

you can absolutely use the concept of the “expected logo” but you need to make sure that you’re elevating it in some way or another…

whether that be through the rest of your brands visual identity like colors, fonts, messaging, patterns, website elements, supporting graphic motifs and more.

it really depends on the type of industry or clientele your brand is going after.

dentists and other healthcare industries are the biggest abusers of obvious logo designs.

they want clarity and trust but sometimes it comes with a cost.

there are definitely businesses where you have an advantage with being obvious, but please don’t try and make it your only brand strategy.

that only works when you’re the ONLY choice in town, and in today’s world, that’s very very very rare.

competition is packed in everything.

instead, take your “literal logo” and fuse it with your brand differentiator.

that’s how you win.

what if you were gifted the ferrari logo?

it’s completely yours to use for ANYTHING.

BUT there’s one catch…

nobody has ever seen that logo or even know what the ferrari brand is.

do you think your brand would still have an impactful logo?

would people be willing to spend mega $$$ on your merchandise just for the opportunity to show it off?

there are quite a few rules that luxury brands follow when creating their logo.

see where your brand logo falls and if it’s appropriately designed for your industry, product or service.

the mistake most brands make is thinking growth comes from more products.

more colors.
more styles.
more options.

but more choice doesn’t automatically make you more valuable.

the better question is:

what makes a customer choose you, spend more with you, and come back again?

that’s where the real leverage is.

the strongest brands aren’t built on one good idea.

they stack multiple advantages until the business becomes harder to compete with.

most brands are selling the wrong thing.

they sell the process.
the features.
the technology.
the years of experience.
the fancy tools.

but that’s usually not what the customer actually cares about.

they care about what changes after they hire you.

less pain.
more confidence.
more time.
more money.
a better result.

your process can help prove that you know what you’re doing.

but the outcome is what makes someone want to buy.

sell the destination, not the vehicle.

most pet brands have the same problem.

they either look way too childish…

or they just slap a dog on the logo and call it a day.

cool doggie den wanted something different.

they’re a private indoor dog park, so the brand still needed to feel fun and playful, but we didn’t want it looking like every other pet business.

the whole concept eventually came down to one word:

COOL.

and what’s cooler than a dog wearing sunglasses? 😎

we explored a bunch of different ways to make that idea work, simplified the mascot, gave it more personality, and paired it with typography that felt just as funky and weird.

then we built out the color palette and carried that same personality into the website.

because this is the part people miss…

brand design isn’t just making a cool logo.

it’s creating a system that makes the whole business feel like the same brand.

how do you get rich selling artwork online?

if i had to make $1 million selling art online, i wouldn’t start by making hundreds of designs for everyone.

that’s how you become another cheap etsy store.

i’d focus on 4 things instead:

1. own a specific niche

become the obvious choice for one type of person instead of trying to appeal to everyone. look at how narrows their collection science inspired art.

2. get people buying in sets

craft the right sales offer that gets people adding 3 prints instead of 1. this means a higher order value, better shipping economics, and more of your work on the wall and in the world.

3. add easy upsells

framing, matting, premium finishes. your customer is already buying, so make the purchase more convenient.

4. change the actual product

this might be the biggest opportunity.

go unusually small. ridiculously large. use a different material. change how it hangs.

didn’t invent wall art. they printed it on metal and made it magnetic.

that one change created an entirely different category.

the more unique traits you combine, the less competition you actually have.
