With all the disruption to our daily lives lately, the topic of how to support remote / home workers has entered the mainstream press. As businesses scramble to keep people safe and do right by their workers and their larger communities, they can still put technology to work to sustain some level of productive work activity.

Sometimes it takes disruption to lead to change. https://insight.wainhouse.com/reportaction/BRF-20-03-WB/Toc

Alan explores two major questions: how likely will meeting space contain interactive flat displays and / or wireless presentation systems, and if they do contain displays, are they touch or non-touch? You might be surprised at the answers.

Brief: The Undeniable Trends Defining the Modern Meeting Experience, Part 3 – The Untamed Workflow

In 2005, Thomas Friedman released the international best seller The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century. The title was a metaphor for viewing the world as a level playing field in terms of business, wherein all competitors have an equal opportunity. Underlying what is now a well-accepted view of globalization, was a host of technologies that enabled this flattening effect to take place – wireless communications, voice over IP (VoIP), instant messaging (IM), and robust information and file sharing technologies.

One outcome of the adoption of these technologies was the business term of “follow the sun.” This term comprised the idea that through these communication technologies, a single unit of “work” could be continuously acted upon by globally disbursed teams. What started as a meeting in California would move to action items for the team in the UK and then evolve into a design sprint for the folks in China.

But the world is more than 'just flat' - in fact, it is the 'untamed workflow' that is taking over. Read the full Wainhouse Brief here:

Brief: The Undeniable Trends Defining the Modern Meeting Experience, Part 2 – The Complicated Workplace… Where Shall We Meet, Your Place or Mine?

Office layouts traditionally have been driven by legitimate changes in business processes and technology. In the 1950s, many companies were small, with only a few key individuals making all the big decisions. "Give that person a corner office! Protect their privacy to help them make good decisions."

The ‘60s introduced larger groups of knowledge workers who were organized into departments and had interdependencies on more open communications. "Create a bullpen. Let Accounting get quick information from Sales."

The ‘70s and ‘80s brought computer terminals with large CRT monitors and noisy dot matrix printers. "Put up temporary walls. Add a file cabinet and overhead bin for quick access to printed reports. We’ll call them cubicles!"

Oh, and at the same time, employers decided to use the size and features in that space to help reward our employees. "Sally, you’re now managing people. We’ll give you a guest chair."

By the time the calendar turned past the year 2000, dedicated monitors were replaced by laptops, and knowledge workers contributed their value through the keyboard. PowerPoint decks and computer code were valued outputs. And, the number of businesses skyrocketed, especially scrappy start-ups. "We’re all a team here so walls come down. Let’s co-locate that scrum team together. Since we’re pre-IPO that also helps us save on real estate. We can even use these old doors as work benches and sit across from each other!"

Many of today’s workspace implementations suffer from carrying forward the same assumptions of yesterday’s workspace culture. Problem is that “one size must fit all” is no longer valid.

So where does that leave us? The trend discussed in this brief may just be the window into the workplace of the future. Read more here: https://insight.wainhouse.com/reportaction/BRF-19-10-ModernMeetings-pt2/Toc

Brief: The Undeniable Trends Defining the Modern Meeting Experience, Part 1 - Generational Effects… Know Your Workforce

Before you can map out the solutions that foster collaboration, you need to understand the dynamics of the meeting in itself. Who is in the meeting? Why are people meeting and how do they collaborate? Where do they meet and what is the space capable of? It’s like understanding the type of driving you’ll be doing before you go shopping for a new car. No need to buy a 4x4 if you will only be doing city driving.

This is part one of a three-part series in which Craig Durr calls out some of the most undeniable trends that are impacting the way we communicate and collaborate in the workplace. Why? Trends are the beginning of the bread crumb trail that tells the story – Recognize the trends and their drivers impacting “the meeting” and then you’ll discover the implications. Discover the implications and you’ll start to see what the future may hold for the modern meeting experience.

Ready for summer? You're welcome. Enjoy Alan's take on the intersection of conference calls, collaboration, UC, and human behavior. Thanks to all the creatives who came before us!

Poly’s recent Perils of the Open Office reminded me of the UC&C industry’s rich history of parody videos. Some of them make fun of how human beings interact with technology. Some make fun of the technology itself. Some make fun of human behavior in meetings. All are entertaining. Taken in the ri...
