There's so much talk around Brand Strategy and lately, it seems like everyone's a brand strategist or some sort of brand expert.

Whenever someone reaches out to me about branding their business; we eventually get on a call to discuss further. We go through a series of questions to get to understand where the business is currently and where it's trying to go.

Often times though, when we get to the question about the target market; the response more often than not is "everyone".

It's understandable why a company would think this way, but here's the thing; You first need to understand why you're branding your business. I'm pretty sure you're not just branding your business because you just feel like spending some money.

You're branding your business because you want it to stand out from everyone else. So here's my recommendation for you. Next time you get asked who's your target audience try to narrow it down as best as possible, because if you can't identify your audience then who are you really hoping to communicate to in your branding?

Last weeks winnings…

I completed the Brand Masterclass; the only professional certification program in brand taught by global expert Marty Neumeier of Liquid Agency (Silicon Valley) and Andy Starr.

The end result - so much branding insight and official title “Certified Brand Specialist”

We were placed in groups that would be our brand team for the week.

Our assignment was to disrupt the “Grocery Store” category. Rooties was born! A grocery store focused on empowering our communities by cultivating a sustainable knowledge-based food ecosystem. (Swipe for more on Rooties!)

We discussed various branding principles and put them to work in our project.
We collaborated on brand naming, internal and external positioning, values, identity building and touch points and presented on some portion each day getting feedback from the other teams as well as Marty & Andy.

Test the focus of your brand by answering the following questions:
1. Who are you?
2. What do you do?
3. Why does it matter?

Logo guidelines usually say things like keep it simple, timeless& scalable but there are many cases where these guides are incorrect. Understanding the science of logo design is powerful by allowing us to focus on what’s important.

We need to design for the brain.
1. An effective logo grabs attention in this noisy world where everyone everywhere is competing.
2. An effective logo elicits an appropriate emotional response. (People like it at a gut level without thinking too much about why)
3. An effective logo expresses appropriate meaning. Logos represent brand values and it is therefore important that the meanings expressed align with those brand values.
4. An effective logo is easily recognized & recalled. If people can’t recognize or recall your logo then any benefits will be short-term.

Score your logo for each attribute to mentioned above to predict the effectiveness of your logo.
