-- about Leslie --

Creative Director Leslie Jonath has over 20 years’ experience in book publishing, creative services, and media business development. From 1991 to 2009, she was an integral part of the editorial and development team at Chronicle Books, a Bay Area-based independent publishing house known for its lively, eye-catching and trend-setting books, gifts, stationary, and other consumer products about food, art, pop culture, gardening, design, lifestyles, and more. As a Senior Editor in the food, lifestyle, and custom publishing categories, Jonath developed acquisition strategies, launched the successful garden and craft categories; acquired, produced, edited, and project-managed over 250 books. She also created a cause-related publishing model for non-profit organizations, creating books like From Our House to Yours to benefit Meals on Wheels of San Francisco. As a Director of Creative Development, Jonath was a founding member and co-director of Chronicle’s Custom Publishing division. Clients included BabyGap, Starbucks, Anthropologie, and the San Francisco Ballet. She and her teams conceptualized, produced and developed innovative “beyond the book” services for custom clients, including videos and other digital products. After leaving Chronicle Books in 2009, Jonath founded Connected Dots Media, working with clients in book packaging, video production, and concept and content development and production.

Flower arranger and florist Chezar takes readers on an elegant walk through the seasons punctuated by her inspired creations. “Why long for tulips, when the woods are filled with wildflowers?” she states at the beginning. Chezar arranges her words as precisely as her flowers, prefacing the instructions for each arrangement with thoughtful discussions of the flowers used and why they are so seasonally appropriate. Blooms should be used to celebrate the season, she writes, and the arrangements, from May Day and wedding crowns to autumn tables and winter wreaths, emphasize what is locally available at a particular time of year. The instructions are presented cookbook-style, with a list of ingredients and step-by-step directions. Chezar understands that not everyone has the time or inclination to find the exact branches and blossoms called for, so, for example, the “Cascades of Gold” arrangement calls for six large Chinese pistache branches, but also lists easily attainable alternatives with the same “golden, autumnal sheen,” including oak, river birch, and zinnias. The combination of instructions, photographs, and elegant prose makes for a delightful companion for gardeners, florists, or armchair naturalists."
