If you want a quick way to tell whether a logo designer actually knows what they’re doing, ask one simple question: Do you design your logos as vectors or rasters?
You don’t need to understand the technical difference yourself. But their answer will tell you everything you need to know.
If they say raster, or worse, look confused, run.
Raster images are made of pixels. That means the moment you try to enlarge your logo for anything bigger than a business card, it turns into a blurry, crunchy mess. Vectors, on the other hand, are built from mathematical paths. They scale infinitely. Tiny favicon? Perfect. Giant billboard? Still perfect.
This isn’t a matter of opinion or design preference. It’s a basic industry standard.
After decades in design, I can promise you: the “my cousin drew this” or “I made it in Photoshop” logos become a nightmare the moment a business grows beyond business cards and word-of-mouth marketing.
And while we’re here… those tiny logos exported by AI tools? The ones people get excited about from quick generators? They’re rarely built to function in the real world. What looks cool on a screen doesn’t automatically translate to signage, merchandise, or, yes, even a billboard.
Design that works requires intention.
Alternatively… you could just hire me. 😇
I’m currently sprinting through the backlog of projects I had to pause while preparing for my trip, but once I’m caught up I’d love to help build a brand that’s bold, scalable, and actually designed to grow with your business. Because a great logo shouldn’t just look good today; it should still work ten years from now.
