I’m proud to share that two of my uncles, Edmond Cubbage and Patrick Cubbage, served in Vietnam and are featured in this powerful film. Titled "The Lads from Swampoodle," the documentary follows these Irish and Italian Catholic boys as they grew up in the 1950s and 60s, served together in Vietnam, and remained lifelong friends, supporting each other through the trauma of war and the challenges of life after.
The film explores not only their individual stories but also the rich history of Swampoodle itself, its working-class roots, and the long-lasting effects of deindustrialization on their community, family, and friends. This tale also highlights Philadelphia's deep history of military service, particularly among its Catholic residents, dating all the way back to the Revolutionary War. It’s a story of friendship, community, sacrifice, and survival, shedding light on the long-term impact of war on veterans and their families.
My Uncle Ed also authored "Just a Kid from Swampoodle to Vietnam," a gripping book available on Amazon that tells the real-life story of a group of friends from the Swampoodle section of Philadelphia. It’s an unforgettable read that honors the lives of these men and the history they carry with them.
The book, available on Amazon, shares not only Ed’s personal experiences but also the collective story of a group of boys-turned-soldiers who navigated the trauma of war and maintained lifelong friendships as a support system for each other. It dives deep into the impact of war on their lives, their community, and their relationships, capturing a history of resilience and brotherhood. Edmond Cubbage’s storytelling brings to life the rich cultural tapestry of Swampoodle and the sacrifices made by those who answered the call to serve.
This book isn’t just a war story—it’s a story of friendship, loss, and the enduring spirit of a neighborhood. Discover this compelling narrative and explore Philadelphia’s long tradition of military service with Ed’s deeply personal account. https://loom.ly/XuPUyTc
