Most people won’t tell you that a link isn’t working on your website.

They click it, it doesn’t work, and then they leave. And you lose conversions.

No matter how small your website, or how closely you keep track of links, it’s always a good idea to regularly check other sources to ensure your links are all working. Google Search Console is free and will send you alerts via email if something breaks. It’s the number one choice in this scenario.

However, if you want another free choice from a reputable source, aHrefs has a link checker that’s awesome. You can also download ScreamingFrog to your computer to check for broken links if you want something a little more in-depth.

Depending on your content management system, you can even add plugins or apps to your site to help with this.

If you’ve checked your entire site and have no 404 errors but you aren’t sure why you’re losing conversions, comment GUIDE to get the link to our website conversion guide.

I worked with a client who lost about a week of sales and had no idea it was happening.

They were on WordPress and they were taking payments through PayPal. Somebody finally called them to say they had tried to check out and the payment screen just spun forever. It never gave an error message and it never told anyone the payment failed, it just sat there loading until people gave up and left. Nothing showed up on the back end either, because those orders never got far enough to actually exist, so from the dashboard it just looked like a slow week.

What had happened is that PayPal pushed an update to their payment gateway. To fix it we had to log into their PayPal settings inside WordPress and check one box to turn the new version on. That was the entire fix, and it cost them a full week of people who wanted to buy from them and could not.

The reason I bring this up is that when your orders suddenly drop off and nothing else about your business has changed, you should go put a real transaction through your own website before you start second guessing your prices or your advertising. It is very easy to spend a month adjusting things that were never the problem.

Links are worth checking for the same reason. Ahrefs looked at links pointing to websites over the last nine years and found that roughly 66 percent of them are now dead, so if you have been in business for a few years, something on your site is almost certainly pointing at a page that no longer exists.

If you want the full list of what to check and why it matters, comment GUIDE and I will send you the link to our website conversion guide.

You don’t always need to spend an arm and a leg to get feedback on your website. Family and friends can be some of the best critics out there. They don’t know the ins and outs of your business, but they can definitely tell when your website is hard to read. It helps to guide them with a few questions like in this video so they know what to look for.

Have you already done this and you’re still not sure why your website isn’t converting? Comment GUIDE and we will send you the link to our website conversion guide.

First impressions matter… sort of.

I promise that you don’t have to have the most polished or beautiful or trendy website. What you do need is a site that tells customers what you sell and allows them to easily purchase it. That’s it.

Go look on your site right now. Do you have a call to action at the top of your page where visitors will see it the moment the page loads? Call now, shop all, schedule, contact us, etc. all work. Next, can people even read your call to action? Fonts might be too thin without enough color contrast to easily see. Don’t go for the sleek, thin fonts. Make sure your visitors can READ your site.

Now for the navigation (nav) bar: does it make sense and follow industry standards? Having a bunch of options that all say “training” in them means nothing to a person who is visiting your site for the first time. The nav bar needs to make sense to more than just you… it has to make sense to your audience!

Of course the site needs to load quickly (you’ve got about three seconds), and once it does, it needs to tell people what you’re selling. Your customers won’t scroll forever. Make it as simple as possible: people see what you sell, they read what you sell, they click a button to purchase what you sell. Done.

Think something else might be deterring your site visitors from converting? Check out our conversion guide on our website or comment GUIDE and we will send you the link a DM: https://bsmediasolutions.com/pages/website-conversions

You don’t need to pay big bucks to determine if your site is working or not. Enlist the help of some friends and test things for yourself:

1) Ask a friend who has never filled out a contact form on your site to try it out. See if they get a confirmation message that their inquiry was submitted, AND have them check their inbox to make sure they received a confirmation. Send a few emails back and forth to verify your systems are working.

2) Have a family member visit your website on their phone, tablet, laptop, etc. and have them send screenshots if they feel like something looks wrong with the website.

3) Click random areas on your own website, and click a LOT. Just see what happens. There might be links or lightboxes you don’t know about. You can also use services like Microsoft Clarity to see where your audience is rage clicking… is there something that looks like a button but is not a button? Time to change the design!

4) Any time new pages are added or new blogs, visit your site to double check load times. A new image, more text, a different design, etc. can all slow down your site if not added correctly.

5) AI uses links that your company provides. Are you SURE that every link on your site works? Ask AI about your site and click the links that show up. You might be surprised to find an old link that is broken.

Your website is a lot like a game of Jenga. Every form, every button, every link, and every app you have installed is a block, and they’re all holding each other up. Pull out the wrong piece and the whole thing falls down.

What catches most people off guard is that things break even when you never touched them. You can leave your contact forms completely alone, go update something else on your site, and break them without ever knowing it happened.

So go submit your own contact forms and make sure the confirmation actually lands in your inbox. Look at your site on a phone, a tablet, and a computer. Click your own buttons and links. Check how long your pages take to load on cell signal, not just Wi-Fi. And if people can book or buy from you, actually run a test through your own checkout.

Nobody is going to tell you when something stops working. They’ll just leave. Read our latest blog for more details!

Gone are the days of, “if you build it, they will come.” Your website needs to be optimized AND advertised to reach the right audience.

When your customers land on your website, they want to take action. If they have to scroll for days, or the call to action buttons blend into the design, they will leave. You have a few seconds to grab someone, don’t waste it!

Share your website with a friend. Ask them if they feel the content is starting a conversation with them. Does it address their pain points? Or is it solely focused on how good your products and services are? Don’t talk AT your customers, talk TO them.

Long landing pages can actually convert better. People want details. So long as you have a call to action button in each section, it doesn’t matter how long your page is. People will scroll until they are satisfied. Don’t shortchange your company with short bullet points that don’t emotionally connect with consumers.

Step away from the decorative fonts. Seriously. Stick to simple, easy to read fonts. Check on your phone to ensure the information isn’t super tiny. Buttons need to be large and easy to click. If your customers have to squint or hit only a VERY certain spot on your page to take action, you will lose them.

Going back to long landing pages, you can’t just have a solid chunk of text. Be sure your pages are broken up by designs, images, and even just some various colors. People like information, but they don’t want to feel like it’s a giant wall.

Finally, and maybe a bit of an unpopular opinion with a small business owner who is budget conscious, you HAVE to run ads. Unless you have a killer SEO strategy in place and you turn into a content monster churning out blogs and web pages like no other, people are not going to make it to your website. Run some ads and get your website in front of your target audience.

Most small business owners believe at least one of these. Swipe through all five.

This myth comes from years ago when dark themes were rare and often poorly built. That has flipped. Research from the Nielsen Norman Group and others puts dark mode preference among users at over 80%, largely driven by reduced eye strain on bright screens, especially at night. A dark website converts just as well as a light one as long as the contrast between your text and your background is strong enough to read comfortably. The myth isn’t about color. It’s about contrast.

A well-known study out of Notre Dame tracked actual click behavior on homepage sliders and found that the vast majority of clicks, in some cases as high as 89%, went to the very first slide. Everything after that got almost no engagement at all. If you’re running a rotating slider, you’re likely paying for design and development on three or four slides that almost nobody ever sees. The fix is simple: pick your single strongest message, put it on one static image, and give it one clear button.

This comes from the well-known “jam study” out of Columbia and Stanford, where researchers set up a tasting table with either 6 or 24 jam flavors. The larger display drew more interest, but the smaller one converted dramatically more shoppers into buyers. The effect is called choice overload, and it shows up constantly in website navigation. A menu with 9 or 10 top-level items asks visitors to make a decision before they’ve even seen your content. Keep it to 5 to 7 items and group the rest under dropdowns.

A popup that fires the second someone lands on your page interrupts them before they’ve decided whether they’re even interested, which is why people hate them. But a popup triggered after 30 seconds, or after a visitor scrolls halfway down the page, targets people who are already engaged. At that point you’re not interrupting, you’re offering something to someone who has already shown intent. Same tool, completely different result, depending entirely on when it shows up.

Visitors don’t leave a page because it’s long, they leave because there’s nothing to hold their attention as they scroll. A page broken into clear s
