My grandfather’s father died when my grandfather was a young child.

He was raised in desperate poverty by his mother and aunt during the great depression.

My grandfather’s favorite joke (though it was true) was:

“During the Great Depression, I wore hand-me-down underwear from my older siblings. I only had sisters.”

From those humble beginnings, my grandfather served in two wars, put himself through college, became an electrical engineer, raised a family, and retired with a healthy 401(k) and homes in Illinois and Florida.

My grandfather's story is the kind of American story we love to tell — a man who overcomes adversity through hard work and perseverance to build the life he dreamed of.

Except…that’s not the whole story

That version of my grandfather’s success is technically true.

It also leaves out so much it borders on mythology.

My grandfather was born healthy — no disabilities, no conditions that would have overwhelmed the family's already-threadbare resources.

His mother was stable, without mental illness or addiction.

She had her sister to lean on when things got desperate.

Then there's the GI Bill, which paid for his college degree. Had my grandfather been African-American, or a woman, or gay, there's a good chance he would have been denied those benefits entirely. No degree. No engineering career. No Florida home.

Change any one of those facts and the story likely ends differently — and earlier.

In fact, I could fill pages with the factors outside his control that quietly paved my grandfather’s road to success. Remove any single one, and you get a different man living a different life.

What is my point?

It’s NOT to minimize my grandfather’s hard work.

He did work his butt off to overcome poverty and build the life he did.

It is fashionable right now to choose one of two narratives and reject the other as the enemy:
• Personal responsibility – Our choices—like working hard and planning carefully—shape our future.
• Structural factors – Some people are born with advantages that make failure unlikely while others face disadvantages that make success impossible.

People argue about which is true, as if it is only one can be.

Both are true. They always have been.

Yes, personal responsibility matters.

And so do structural forces — family stability, environmental conditions, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia.

The circumstances you are born into are not a minor footnote.

My grandfather worked hard and he caught breaks he didn't earn and didn't ask for.

Holding both of those things at once isn't weakness or political correctness.

It's just honesty.

Peace,

Ryan

If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other—that man, that woman, that child is my brother or my sister.

I try not to get emotionally attached to politicians; it’s never paid off for me. Instead, I'm taking a stand for human rights which are under great duress in the US right now. Hoping all our efforts will help our country become better, not worse.

Words can’t even capture how enraged and horrified I am that an ICU nurse simply filming and assisting a woman was shot 10 times and our government immediately goes into slander mode. The agents who shot him are also right back on duty as if nothing happened. Can you imagine what the Feds would be saying if none of it was on video?! This administration is lying and gaslighting us. Enough is enough. RIP Alex Pretti.

It's been a privilege beyond imagining for me to work with the dedicated team of Westside CARES these past 5 years. Here, I gain more opportunities to see, understand, and contribute to the journeys of beautiful souls in our community who face very difficult realities every day, living without comforts I often take for granted.

The annual Neighbor Portraits Day has become a highlight of the year: I join our friend Risa and watch John Goddard in action, engaging Neighbors with his characteristic keen ear for interesting stories, and skillfully capturing the beauty and unique character of each person with his photography.

This Auric Gallery show offers a glimpse into the expansive beauty John has captured. Kristy Milligan, CEO of Westside CARES and bright visionary of our city, will speak and share poetry she has composed about her personal interactions with Neighbors who visit Westside CARES for assistance. Not to be missed!

This promises to be a powerful and meaningful event, a gathering of community and show of support for every beautiful member of our community and for Westside CARES, who brings us together to show compassion and advocate for their care.

I hope to see you there!

There are a million little ways to make a big difference in the lives of struggling families. I've been the recipient of assistance, personally know the difference it makes in overcoming a crisis, and I'm privileged to work with IFCS now. If you share some holiday generosity as a child's sponsor, you will literally be someone's anonymous hero... ❤️

I'm glad to hear that money laundering from gambling establishments in Mexico is being tracked down. I've received several inquiries over the past few years asking for design work on projects with large budgets. The fishy thing was, when we got into the details about the work, the correspondent would request to send me money in advance, that I could send to the "printer" (or some other "manufacturer" of the product they wanted the design applied to). They wanted me to make the "purchase" on their behalf (AKA money laundering). Glad I never fell for this, or lost anything but a few hours of work, in these dealings.

➜Helpful tip to other business owners: requiring an initial video meeting with someone wanting to discuss large projects (even if they claim to be deaf) shuts down scammers before the money laundering scheme can even be identified.

Let me know if you have additional tips to share!

This week, Pope Leo XIV released his (and Pope Francis’) apostolic exhortation, Dilexi te ("I have loved you"). In it, he emphasizes that those experiencing financial (and other) hardships are representatives of Christ who deserve love. Showing love includes personal giving as well as working to change unjust systems that cause poverty. Love in action, he says, has the power to transform reality.

My favorite line - among all the quotes that trace a rich tradition through time - is in Pope Leo's closing segments: "Love is above all a way of looking at life and a way of living it. A Church that sets no limits to love, that knows no enemies to fight but only men and women to love, is the Church that the world needs today."

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of working with Thrive Breathing + Sleep to help develop their logo and branding. If their clinic work is anything like their professional collaboration, Thrive's patients are in excellent hands. Both Dr. Ryan and Margaret were clear communicators and efficient in their effectiveness.

I wasn't familiar with dental sleep medicine and postural dentistry, so here's what I learned: Thrive Breathing + Sleep is a non‑surgical clinic focused on diagnosing and treating airway, breathing, and sleep‑related conditions. They emphasize the “oral/dental” contribution to airway health, because jaw structure and dental alignment influence breathing, and teeth play an important role in posture, balance, and grounding, with everything affecting a good night's sleep and how one moves through life.

Kudos to Thrive Breathing + Sleep for building a brand that promotes your professionalism. I hope your new branding attracts the perfect people who are needing your services!

On Saturday, the USDA announced that the report on food insecurity will be canceled after the Oct 25 report, so changes to SNAP benefits starting this month won't be recorded. On Monday, hunger researchers were put on leave.

The USDA has canceled the Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (CPS-FSS), which has been our country's source for national and state-level statistics on food insecurity for 30 years.

Losing this resource will make it harder to assess the nourishment needs of our communities, and the impact of the recent cuts to SNAP benefits. (Historically, studies show that SNAP reduces food insecurity by 17-30% and by as much as one-third among children.)

The final report, covering 2024 food insecurity data in the U.S., is set to be released on October 22, according to the Associated Press.

UPDATE: The concert is Sold Out! Albums are available at any of their concerts, though, and/or may be purchased directly by contacting Deb though their website: http://www.themitguards.com

Deb and Chris Mitguard are releasing a new album, and I had the honor of working on their cover layout. They have a community-centric vibe, which plays out in their songs, their collaborative work, and their heart for the human journey... I extend their invitation to join us at their new CD Release Concert this Thursday, September 18! Details in the post below, and at https://themat.org/mitguard-cd-release-community-partnership-2025-2/

For those who aren't familiar with The Mitguards, they define their music as "Original & Obscure: Folk, Roots, and Americana".

To me, some of the lyrics strike to the heart with their authenticity, while other songs are fun and catchy. I love their blend of instruments, their harmonized voices, and the messages they put out into the world.
