: Be Uncomfortable. Silence isn't always golden. Sometimes, it's downright uncomfortable and even a little bit scary. It can be a real challenge to keep our mouths closed during a mystery shop, and let the representative "drive" the interaction. It's perfectly natural to want to respond affirmatively when someone asks, "Do you have any questions?" It's also perfectly understandable to want to fill that uncomfortable silence. The problem, however, is that doing so changes the dynamic of the entire shop. The representative may say/do or not say/do something strictly because of the shopper's prompting. I listened to a phone shop recording today that was a perfect example of the professional shopper. This shopper did everything right, and the result was that the Client can also hear that silence, and is then able to evaluate exactly how the representative responded and reacted to that silence. This is priceless information, because all customers are different, and a business needs to be able to serve them all. That starts with the individual employees who are interacting with customers at all points of contact. Remember to read your shop guidelines for information about when you need to ask a general knowledge question, prompt, or not prompt the representative. If no general knowledge question or prompt is required, then sit back, relax and get UNcomfortable.

It is NOT okay to use one mystery shopping company's media/property to breach the confidentiality of another. As a contractor, if you are using corporate social media pages, reporting media, or even email accounts to breach the confidentiality of another company, Integrity Consultants - Mystery Shopping & Video Shopping considers this breach of contract/confidentiality, as well as misuse and abuse of the company's physical and intellectual property. We feel so strongly about this that we made a policy update January 1st of 2016. Mystery Shopping companies are competitors, yes, but they're also colleagues and pieces of a much larger industry. Has your company adopted a "No Tolerance" policy? Do you update your contracts and policies annually? If you didn't get around to updating January 1st, now is an excellent time to do so.
