(From Vicki Frye)
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the women who built the foundation I stand on today. While we often look to history books for inspiration, my world was shaped much closer to home by two grandmothers who were pioneers in their own right.
Grandma Iva was a force to contend with and a woman who didn't know how to mince words (my grandpa would have fully agreed 😉). In the 1970s, she didn't just work—she was an entrepreneur, owning/operating Iva's House of Beauty (a freestanding beauty salon) at a time when female business ownership was rare. Iva's sponsored local teams and was a destination for local women. As a kid, she was my feisty grandmother who, in her free time, was always on the move—bowling, golfing, camping and nightly playing games with us. Looking back now, I realize the incredible resolve it took for her to be a business owner when that was typically reserved for men. She taught me that you can run a business and maintain a deep, joyful passion for life.
On the other hand there was Grandma Vera, my Dad's mom. She was as sincere and loving as anyone you’d ever meet. That kindness was paired with remarkable strength, the result of someone who knew what it was like to experience pain. In the 1940s, she made the incredibly brave choice to leave an abusive situation to protect herself and her sons. She moved, resettled and charted an entirely new course for her family. Despite the hardships of that transition, she remains to this day, the most generous soul I’ve known. She had a gift for making each of her six grandchildren feel like the most special person in the world (we all still claim to be her favorite 😊). From her, I learned that true leadership is rooted in the courage to do what is right and the heart to care for others along the way.
I miss them and it seems strange that my kids will never know them directly. But, I carry both of them with me every day: Iva’s fiery personality and Vera’s resilient kindness. They are the two halves of the legacy I hope to extend to others. I am who I am because of them.
I’d love to hear about the women in your life who shaped the person you are today.
