⛓️ It's the 4th of July, America's Independence Day.

On this day in 1776, our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence. Did the actions of Donald Trump and his supporters on January 6, 2021 violate the democratic principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence? Of course they did, in several ways:

Undermining Free Elections: The Declaration emphasizes the right of the people to choose their government. The attempt to overturn a certified election result contradicted the fundamental democratic principle of respecting the will of the electorate.

Attack on Democratic Institutions: The storming of the Capitol was a direct assault on the legislative branch, disrupting the peaceful transfer of power—a core aspect of democratic governance that the Declaration upholds by endorsing government accountability and representation.

Incitement to Violence: The promotion of violence and insurrection contradicted the Declaration’s ideals of lawful governance and civil order, challenging the foundational concept that grievances should be addressed through democratic processes rather than force.

Do Native, African-, Asian, and Hispanic Americans have anything to celebrate today?

Many Native Americans view the 4th of July as a celebration of colonialism and the oppression of indigenous peoples rather than a celebration of independence. The Declaration of Independence itself refers to Native Americans as ""merciless Indian Savages."" Furthermore, contemporary celebrations often overlook or ignore the painful history of Native American communities, perpetuating a sense of exclusion and historical erasure.

For many African-Americans, the Declaration of Independence's assertion that ""all men are created equal"" starkly contrasts with the historical realities of slavery and systemic racism that have plagued African-American communities since the nation's founding. This contradiction was poignantly highlighted by Frederick Douglass in his 1852 speech, ""What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?"" For many, Independence Day serves as a reminder of the persistent fight that must go on for civil rights and justice.

Despite the holiday's celebration of freedom and independence, Asian Americans have faced exclusionary policies, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. These historical injustices, coupled with ongoing issues of racism and xenophobia, contribute to mixed feelings about the 4th of July.

Little was an inspirational figure in football who showcased his remarkable talent and leadership from an early age. During high school at Hillhouse in New Haven, he excelled in multiple sports, setting the stage for his future success. At Syracuse University, Little became a standout running back, following in the footsteps of legends like Jim Brown and Ernie Davis. His exceptional ability on the field was matched by his leadership qualities, as he served as team captain and inspired his teammates through his work ethic and determination. Little's accomplishments at Syracuse, including multiple All-American honors, not only highlighted his prowess but also laid the foundation for a storied career that would leave a lasting impact on the game.

After graduating from Syracuse, Little became a legendary figure in the National Football League, renowned for both his exceptional talent and his tenacity as a running back. Playing his entire career with the Denver Broncos from 1967 to 1975, Little became a cornerstone of the team and a symbol of perseverance. The Capitol Fourth Concert, held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, begins at 8:00 PM and will be broadcast live on PBS. This isn't necessarily a day of celebration, though, for the iconic monarch butterflies that inhabit much of the United States, and for that matter, much of North America.

Mexico's avocado industry poses a threat to monarch butterflies primarily through deforestation. As avocado plantations expand, they encroach upon the butterflies' critical overwintering habitats in the forests of Michoacán. This loss of habitat reduces the available space for the monarchs to cluster during the winter, disrupting their life cycle and decreasing their populations. Additionally, the increased use of pesticides and fertilizers in avocado farming can further harm the delicate ecosystem that supports these butterflies. The last remaining enslaved African-Americans had been liberated!

Modern-day Juneteenth celebrations serve as both a commemoration of the past and a call to action for the future.

In recent years, Juneteenth has experienced a resurgence in popularity and significance, fueled by a growing awareness of racial injustices and a renewed commitment to confronting systemic racism.
