Yes, you can raise some money on social during viral moments. But the base of your grassroots fundraising engine is always going to be the list you cultivate strategically over time.

Normally I’m all about campaigns and nonprofits getting creative and experimenting with new digital tactics, but there’s one place I really am old school: email fundraising. It might not be the flashiest way to raise money online, but there a reason it’s been the bread and butter of online fundraising programs for years, and it’s not going away any time soon.

The Atlantic published an investigative piece that revealed an effort known as “Elephant Clipping” has been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every month to have clippers post pro-GOP videos across the internet, racking up billions of views at a shockingly cheap cost.

As the article makes the rounds through Democratic circles, though, I’m worried that people are taking away the wrong lessons for where our side should go next.

Republicans have been spending HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars to push their messaging onto our feeds for MONTHS. It’s vital that Democrats take away the right lessons here — and do more to counter these efforts, not less.
