Today, we honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy. On January 13th, 2023 the Embrace monument designed by black sculpture artist Hank Willis Thomas was unveiled in Boston. Thomas designed the sculpture based on the photograph depicted above because it shows the loving embrace of MLK Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Thomas stated that "[Coretta] was the symbol. Her grace, her presence was palpable. And I thought that was a pretty powerful metaphor for their legacy, that she put his legacy on her shoulders and carried it for almost half a century."
