Story Matters
Listening is a radical act of care in a world that moves at breakneck speed. It transforms relationships, builds stronger communities, and fuels meaningful change. By prioritizing listening, we don’t just hear voices—we empower them. And in doing so, we create a world where every story and storyteller matters.

Listening is more than just hearing words; it is an act of connection.

When we take the time to listen to someone’s story, we acknowledge their humanity and experiences. Whether in a one-on-one conversation, a community gathering, or through oral history projects, listening fosters understanding and strengthens the bonds that hold communities together. It allows us to recognize shared struggles, celebrate common joys, and build bridges across differences.

Social media often amplifies voices but doesn’t always encourage deep listening. The quick consumption of content—tweets, reels, and soundbites—can reduce complex narratives into fleeting moments. However, when we pause to engage with someone’s full story, we create space for empathy, learning, and action. This is especially important in the realm of social impact. Nonprofits, grassroots movements, and change-makers rely on listening to shape solutions that address real needs.

In a world that moves at breakneck speed, listening is a radical act of care. It transforms relationships, builds stronger communities, and fuels meaningful change. By prioritizing listening, we don’t just hear voices—we empower them. And in doing so, we create a world where every story and storyteller matters.
In today’s digital age, we are bombarded with endless multimedia and social media notifications vying for our attention. During this constant noise, the art of listening—truly listening—has become more important than ever.

The Power of "Yes, And..." in Design Theory and Work Relationships

I recently spent some time at the School of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, where we discussed design theory and its use in social impact and nonprofit environments.

The "Yes, And..." principle is a foundational tool in design thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Rooted in improvisational theater, this approach encourages openness, adaptability, and collective innovation by building upon ideas rather than shutting them down. In design theory, where iteration and co-creation are essential, "Yes, And..." fosters an environment where new possibilities emerge, leading to more user-centered and innovative solutions.

At its core, "Yes, And..." rejects the instinct to dismiss or critique ideas too early in the creative process. Instead of saying, "That won’t work," this approach prompts us to respond with curiosity and build upon suggestions. For example, when brainstorming solutions to a complex user experience problem, a team that embraces "Yes, And..." creates a space where ideas flow freely, encouraging unconventional connections and uncovering solutions that might otherwise remain hidden.

Beyond design, we can integrate "Yes, And..." into our daily working relationships to cultivate a culture of trust and collaboration. Adopting this mindset can transform discussions from debates into constructive dialogues when engaging with colleagues. For instance, rather than shutting down a colleague’s proposal in a meeting, we can validate their perspective and contribute an additional insight: "Yes, that’s a great idea, and we could also explore how it impacts long-term scalability." This approach signals that all voices are valued, reducing defensiveness and increasing engagement.

By incorporating "Yes, And..." into our professional interactions, we shift from a limitation mindset to one of expansion. Whether in team meetings, problem-solving sessions, or creative endeavors, this simple yet powerful tool fosters innovation, strengthens collaboration, and ultimately leads to more meaningful and effective outcomes.

I will keep you posted on my progress as I intentionally implement “Yes, And …” into my daily work interactions...
