ENSENADA, Mexico (AP) — Three men charged with murder in the 2024 killings of two Australian brothers and an American friend went on trial Monday in Mexico’s Baja California state, court officials said.

The three men are charged with murder and aggravated robbery in the killing of the three people who went missing while camping and surfing at a remote beach in Baja.

Jesús Gerardo García, known as “El Kekas,” and two others identified as Irineo Francisco N. and Ángel Jesús N. appeared in court in the coastal city of Ensenada over the deaths of Callum Ryan Robinson, 33, Jake Martin Robinson, 30 and Jack Carter Rhoad, 30. The surnames of the latter two defendants were withheld in according with Mexican criminal procedure.

Their bodies were found several days later, dumped in a cliff-top shaft with gunshot wounds to their heads.

Martin Robinson, the father of the Australian brothers, attended the hearing with his wife.

“I know they would want us to be here; they would do the same for us,” he told reporters before entering the courthouse.

Prosecutors say the men were killed during an attempt to steal their pickup truck, which was later found burned near their bodies.

García former partner, Silva Raya, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last year after admitting she instigated the robbery to steal the pickup’s tires.

The trial is due to continue Tuesday.

The Tiguerones, the Ecuadorian criminal group, was added to the US State Department’s list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) this month. But although the designations expand the US government’s powers to target the group, its members, and its support networks, the Tiguerones are far from a cohesive organization.

In Ecuador, the Tiguerones have been linked to terrorist attacks as well as drug trafficking, extortion, and robbery. Ecuador’s police accused the group of being behind a car bomb outside a police station in the port city of Guayaquil, a crucial transshipment point for drugs heading to Europe, in May 2022. And members of the group stormed a television station in the same city during a live broadcast in January 2024. The incident made headlines around the world and prompted President Daniel Noboa to declare an internal armed conflict and designate 22 criminal groups, including the Tiguerones, terrorist organizations, more than two years before the US government did so.

A U.N.-mandated probe said on Wednesday that Venezuela's apparatus of repression remains largely intact despite a reduction in some abuses following President ‌Nicolas Maduro's removal from power earlier this year.

The U.S. has locked Maduro up to face trial on drug-trafficking charges, but left his Socialist Party government largely intact, to the disappointment of Venezuela's opposition which says it was robbed of a 2024 vote and should be in power.

In a report to the U.N. Human Rights Council, the independent fact-finding mission said Maduro's capture in January led to a fall in long-term politically motivated detentions and related abuses, but did not amount to a fundamental break with years of repression.
"The measures of political liberalization adopted since that date remain partial, conditional and reversible at best," the mission said, adding a departure from the harshest forms of repression may not be a "genuine and sustainable departure".

Venezuela's mission to the U.N. in Geneva did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Russia’s parliamentary election for the first time includes residents of regions that Moscow illegally annexed from Ukraine after the start of its full-scale invasion more than 4 1/2 years ago, part of Kremlin efforts to cement its gains.

Officials in Kyiv vigorously denounced the action as illegal, and a human rights activist described residents there as being coerced to participate in the election.

While the vote across Russia started Friday and lasts until Sunday to help boost turnout, balloting actually has been underway in the annexed parts of Ukraine and some areas on the Russian side of the border since the end of last month. Officials cited security reasons for the extended period.

Russian authorities say the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia territories, often referred to by Moscow officials as the “new regions,” have over 3.5 million voters. They were annexed by Russia in September 2022, despite not fully being under Moscow’s control. The move has not been recognized internationally.

INTELLIGENCE LEAK: THE "TROJAN HORSE" OF CHAPITOS IN MAZATLÁN CONGRESSMAN CARLOS ESCOBAR CUTS DEAL WITH IVÁN ARCHIVALDO TO SEIZE PACIFIC NARCO-HUB

INTELLIGENCE DESK / SPECIAL REPORT — High-level intelligence assessments circulating through Mexican Army (SEDENA) federal task forces and law enforcement informant networks reveal a high-stakes infiltration scheme unfolding in Sinaloa: local Congressman Carlos Escobar has effectively emerged as the primary "Trojan Horse" for Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar (IAG), the supreme commander of Los Chapitos. According to sensitive operational reports, IAG is backing Escobar’s bid to capture the mayor’s office in the critical coastal stronghold of Mazatlán—the prized "Pearl of the Pacific," which serves simultaneously as a booming real estate paradise and a vital maritime logistics hub for international narcotics trafficking.

Federal military intelligence reports indicate that Escobar secured a direct pact with IAG after being cut off and abandoned by his former financial backers linked to the rival "La Mayiza" faction. In exchange for massive infusions of illicit capital and targeted media influence operations to supercharge his political campaign, Escobar allegedly agreed to surrender municipal decision-making and key security infrastructure to the Chapitos’ leadership, handing over the keys to one of the Pacific's most lucrative ports.

The operational leaks further detail a calculated insider threat campaign. Federal informants report that Escobar agreed to act as an active intelligence asset for IAG, collecting and leaking confidential political data aimed at sabotaging high-profile local figures—most notably current Mazatlán Mayor Estrella Palacios. By systematically leaking damaging material to erode Palacios' public standing, Escobar aims to destabilize the current administration from within while artificially inflating his own popularity numbers ahead of the upcoming municipal elections.

More and more countries across Latin America and the Caribbean are reporting cases of ketamine trafficking, reflecting a shift in the region’s drug markets driven by the rise of synthetic drug cocktails and more dispersed supply chains.

On August 3, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Arica, Chile, convicted 17 alleged members of an organization that trafficked ketamine from Peru to Chile. Shipments crossed the Tacna-Arica border using drug couriers who entered the country on foot and were then flown on domestic flights to supply drug markets in the Metropolitan Region, according to the investigation.

Cartels in Sinaloa Deploy Abandoned Vehicles as Mobile Stashes: Over 3,000 Drug Doses Seized in Mazatlán

Mexican security forces in Sinaloa have seized more than 3,000 individual doses of suspected narcotics found tucked inside an abandoned vehicle in the coastal resort city of Mazatlán, highlighting an ongoing tactical shift by local organized crime groups utilizing unlinked cars as temporary stash locations.

Officers from the Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety, alongside a joint inter-institutional task force, discovered a dark red Ford sedan sitting unattended with its doors wide open in the Chulavista neighborhood.

A search of the vehicle yielded a significant multi-drug stash, including:

1,675 baggies containing a granulated substance resembling m**hamphetamine (crystal m**h)

800 baggies containing a white powder with characteristics of co***ne

800 baggies of green leafy material consistent with ma*****na

35 pre-rolled joints containing the same leafy substance

In total, authorities recovered 3,310 individual drug doses from the site.

According to preliminary law enforcement checks, the vehicle had not been reported stolen. Intelligence analysts note that cartels operating in urban centers like Mazatlán frequently leave clean or unlinked vehicles parked on public streets to serve as decentralized, low-profile drop points or "bodegas" (warehouses), minimizing the risk of losing major permanent real estate during targeted raids.

Both the vehicle and the seized narcotics were turned over to federal authorities for formal forensic analysis and further criminal investigations.
