A letter landed on a client's desk recently that looked just like a renewal invoice. 📬

It had a notice date, a reference number, her domain name, and even the name of the company where her domain is actually registered. The charge: $289 for an "Annual Website Domain Listing." 💸

Read the fine print and all it sold was a listing on the sender's own website. Nothing about it renewed her domain. 🚫

Your domain details are public, which is exactly why these letters look so convincing. 🔍

The fix is simple:
✅ Ignore the letter and log into the registrar you actually use
✅ Turn on auto-renew
✅ Keep the account in the owner's name with two-factor login
✅ Register the domain several years out

Last month a client forwarded me an official-looking letter with her domain name, a renewal date, and an amount due. Her question: is this real? 🤔

It wasn't. And when we surveyed our clients this fall, scams came up more than almost any other concern. 📋

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month 🔐, I wrote up the four scams I see most often aimed at small business websites:

📬 Fake domain renewal notices
📧 "Your account will be suspended" emails
📞 Phony Google listing and directory calls
🛒 Fraudulent orders on online stores

Most of them share three traits: urgency, unexpected contact, and an unusual way to pay or act. Once you know the pattern, they lose a lot of their power. ✅

When the new owners of NPC Robotics bought the company, they inherited more than a business. They also inherited a website. 🤖

⚡ Slow website? It might come down to one setting: caching.

Caching saves a "ready-to-go" version of your pages so your site doesn't rebuild everything from scratch for every visitor. It's surprisingly common for a caching plugin to be installed but not actually turned on. 🔍

⚠️ Quick PSA for WordPress site owners: an outdated PHP version isn't just a "nice to update" notice.

It can mean a slower site, more security risk, and compatibility issues down the road. The fix depends on your host: some let you update it yourself, others need a quick support request. 💻

Quick tip: a backup you've never actually tested is a backup you're only hoping works! 🤞

This month, try a test restore if your host allows it. It's the only way to really know your site is protected. 💪

Not all backups are equal! 🤓 If you've got one, here's what a good one actually needs:

📅 Daily or weekly, not monthly
📍 Stored somewhere other than your own server
🗂️ More than one past version saved
✔️ Both your files and your database

And don't forget your media library and order data, those get missed a lot! 📸💳
